Brownstone unit numbers?

We are finishing up a renovation of a 4 story brownstone in Park Slope and are tryign to figure out how to number the units.  Its a triplex over a garden rental.  What do other people do, does it matter? do we have to file anything with anyone? Anything else we are missing?

I lived in a 4-unit (3 plus garden / basement apt) and the mailman delivered seperately to the basement.  Usually.   There was as seperate mailbox down there.   That was a standard size brownstone for the neighborhood.  What was confusing to everyone, including the substitute mail carriers, and a significant amount of UPS/Fedex, was that the parlor was #1 and garden was “basement”.  That was always so frustrating to the tenant who lived in the basement.     I think intuitively numbering the lowest apt as #1 will make life easy, but i m not knowledgable about matching with C of O.  Just a 2c comment.

The post office will deliver to the existing situation or to an officially approved mailbox. They will not change from one unsanctioned (but grandfathered) situation to another unofficial one. So its what you have now or a a 2-unit mailbox and keykeeper.

If a house has more than 2 units, each unit would have a floor name conforming with the Certificate of Occupancy, i.e. garden level would be basement, parlor floor would be 1st floor, floor above that would be 2nd floor, etc. With 2 units, you can use same naming convention: 1 and B, or 1st floor and Basement. It matters to the post office that you distinguish between units, and your tenant will appreciate a divided 2-unit mailbox which can be found at HD or Lowes.

Usually the unit numbers correspond to those that ConEd uses on its billing, making it easier.  In a smaller building like that, are unit numbers really all that necessary?  Otherwise, Units 1-4, typically starting at the bottom floor.  Will you just put names on doorbells?
