Party Wall

The building next door to us is undergoing complete renovation which includes adding a roof deck supported by steel beams which will be supported by party walls. Do they need explicit permission from us to proceed? Thanks

They do not need permission from a neighbor if the I-beams are positioned on their client’s half of the parapet (load bearing)walls…which is usually 6″ into the shared walls on either side. To insure the condition of the parapet walls it’s best to get an engineer’s consult’.

They need a permit.  My architect told me that he is careful (and thus may be required) not to use more than half the carrying load of the shared wall, thus no preventing you from making similar improvements in the future.  He did not mention anything about getting permission from a neighbor.  But maybe we just haven’t gotten to that part yet.
