lawyer for suing NYC?
We may need to sue the city to settle a claim for damage to our personal property caused by sewage spill. I’m told that this is a giant hassle (and how could it not be?), so we’re trying to avoid it, but we also want to consult with a lawyer who specializes in these things. Does anyone know a lawyer with experience suing the city?

PS Thanks, Bob Marvin! We did file the claim with the Comptroller. Now we’re amending the claim with actual amounts that were pending before, while the insurance company prepared a final Statement of Loss. We’ve been told that the city will get back to us with an offer in the next couple of weeks, so we want to consult with a lawyer in advance so that we know what’s a good deal and what’s not as we to try to stay out of court.

Oh, I know. We’re going through a separate process with our insurance company, and I assume that the carrier is subrogating the claim to the city, but we’re not involved with that. What I’m talking about here is the claim that we’re filing with the city for all of the costs that aren’t covered by our insurance policy (e.g., our deductible; amounts over the policy limit, etc.). Some of those arose from damage to the building and others are from damage to our personal property in the building. We have piles of documentation of everything, and we dealt with the insurance company ourselves, but we’ve been advised to consult with a lawyer to help us with the negotiation with the city.

Don’t forget to file a claim with the Comptroller’s Office first. IIRC this is a required first step.

Your insurance should cover the damage and/or pursue the City on your behalf. You don’t offer a lot of information here, but I am assuming the damage was to your home?
