if it’s laying down – get a chainsaw and have at it.  Don’t hire someone to do something as easy as that (unless you’re unable, due to disability, age, etc)

We lost a tree in our backyard slightly after Irene (a 14″ diameter Red Maple that spilt and now is draped over several yards). The arborists is quoting about $1700 for removal. Is it crazy for me to think about just getting a chain saw and chipper and doing it myself? The tree is mostly on the groun so there is no ‘felling’ of tall sections….it seems like a lot of money which my insurance doesn’t seem interested in covering

I would buy a good chainsaw.  The DOS will remove small enough bundles and possibly bigger sections if you call and make an appointment for pickup.  Call 311 for the number and ask specific requirements.  If you are friendly($) with your local pickup guys, they will probably take some bagged stuff as well.  Helping load doesn’t hurt.

When a tree is standing, you need an arborist. When it’s laying down you need a chainsaw! Parks will take 30 bundles of wood, 4′ x 3′. You make an appointment to have it picked up. I am in the process of having my 45 foot tree cut up and so I am not sure if they will come out twice if you have more wood than 30 bundles. But, since it’s maple and therefore susceptible to longhorn beetle, parks will be very keen to take care of it for you.

You could also try Green Leaf aka Dragonetti – 718-451-1300 I had a tree removed (pre-Irene)… Family Tree service gave me a price of $5000 (!) and the guys at Green leaf did it for a reasonable price. Post-Irene they’re probably all still busy & may not give you a great price or do it quickly. Buying a chain saw might not be a bad idea.
