Hot tub?
You don’t need a crane, just some steel cable and a $30 hand winch. I’ve done this with friends and the only hard part is when it took 5 of us to pull it over the ledge. if you send spend 2 hours and build a raised boom on the roof you could do it with 2 people. Getting it down the back of the house is a piece of cake.

This may sound crazy but has anyone in the Brownstoner community installed a hot tub in their backyard? Or know someone who has? I have been told a crane would be needed to get the large tub into the yard, which has no access other than through the house. But I have not found a supplier with experience in Brooklyn. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

The weather would seem to make this so difficult. First you would need to be able to winterize the plumbing so the pipes don’t burst and freeze. Then it would be boiling in the summer and I don’t know that a hot tub would be appealing. There are about 10 days in spring and summer when it might work. Though of course if this global warming continues, we’ll soon have weather just like SF, so you’ll be in the clear. Hopefully that will kill off all the mosquitos, which currently swarm in such clouds I don’t even venture out into the garden except in sprints to water the plants while wearing vast swathes of protective clothing.

Not a good idea for New York.

I only knew of one hot tub in Brooklyn ever and that house was listed on Brownstoner awhile back. http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/blog/2009/06/open-house-pick-279/ That small house on 15th Street had a hot tub in the back in the early 2000’s. The house has since changed hands a number of times but I wonder if the hot tub is still there? The answer to that might give you some indication as to whether it’s a good or bad idea.

buy a kit. snorkle.com. walk it through your front door. run a 100amp conduit to the tub. enjoy. best thing i purchased in the last two years. use it all year round, the colder the better. no chemicals to fuss with. google traditional japanses ofuro. i also reuse the water by draining into my flowerbeds and grassy yard 🙂
