Exterior Phone/Cable Wire Removal

Has anyone had exterior phone/cable wires removed from their home after a renovation?  If so, did you call both the phone company and the cable company?  We have 8 wires coming into our home, and only need one, the cable wire.  We want them removed at the pole.  We haven’t had phone company service for 10 years, so I’d rather not get them involved.  Wondering if I can slip the cable guy a few bucks and have him clean everything up when they come out to re-install our cable.  We have Time Warner, so I know that I should keep my expectations low.  Is this something that a licensed electrician can do?  Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

Just cut them and be done with it.  Waiting for the utility guys to run cleanup will be futile.   If the cable installer is willing, certainly slip him a tip for removing the extraneous wiring.

I got them to come out by telling them (after 30+ years of trying) that the back wall was coming out of my house and the contractor’s men were going to cut the wires if they didn’t remove them (true). Other people have had success by saying the trees (or vines or whatever) are interfering with the wires and if Verizon (or whoever) doesn’t take care of the wires, the vines will be cut down and the wires along with them.

After years of complaining I went out to the back yard and cut the wires with one of those long tree trimming poles.  I made a few mistakes judging by the half dozen or so people cursing at me from their windows, but both Verizon and Time Warner came out and fixed everything without saying a word to me about what happened.  The truth is Verizon is no longer putting much effort into maintaining their copper lines.  It’s all about FIOS now.  Verizon “owns” the poles so Time Warner doesn’t have very much of a say anyway.  So cut away and ask for forgiveness later.

Nothing special. Scissors and wire cutters. We still have a couple of danglers that we couldn’t reach.

I read here once that the key phrase was “wire management” and that you could call each installer to take care of their own work. But from my dealings with the installers – Time Warner and Verizon, I wouldn’t expect much help from them. On our house we ended up just cutting the undesired wires and removing them ourselves, but ours were either on the side of the building or the low roof. I’m not sure what kind of pole you’re referring to.
