Big tree limb in backyard. What to do?

My neighbor’s tree lost a big limb (about 7″ in diameter, 15 ft long) and it landed in our backyard. Since it’s on private property and not blocking a road, NYC has no obligation to handle this. We can cut it up in smaller pieces, but we’re not sure what to do from there. Does our neighbor have any obligation, and who can we get to carry this away?  All thoughts welcome!

If you cut it up into pieces shorter than 4 feet each and tie them in bundles less than three feet high the City will take them away.   Set up an appointment by calling 311 or going to www.nyc.gov and scroll to Parks Department.  Because of the storm they are not setting up new appontments until 9/1.  Call or log on then.

Unless it was dead, diseased, or an obvious danger – generally it is not the neighbors responsibility when it comes to a storm bringing down limbs. With that said – it might be worth it talking to the neighbor about it anyway.  If the damage to the tree is bad enough – it will likely have to come out, and hiring the same removal company to do the job on both sides of the fence is typically cheaper, per person, than each of you hiring people separately.
