Where to refinish a porcelain sink
We recently salvaged a porcelain pedestal sink and would like to refinish it. Any recommendations for good shops who do this locally? Thank you!

Looks ceramic to me also. Be aware that the reglazing process (the baking layers in a kiln process, not the applying of paint in the home) changes some aspects of the sink, such as the pitch and size of the drain. The flatter pitch makes the water sit around the drain rather than go down, and that’s not good, though putting a basket over it helps, as does frequent wiping. As well, it can be tricky to find a correctly fitting replacement for the metal part that sits in the drain and holds the strainer. (We found one measuring one and one quarter inches in diameter that fit our drain at Central Plumbing on 97th and Park in Manhattan. The item is CP Brass two piece PO plug with chain and stopper, Model FY-925, made by Matco-Norca. Also, Alfano in Queens is still in business online and has old deadstock parts as well as new and can machine anything you need.) If you can find an appropriate salvage sink in good condition, it may be preferable to reglazing. Good luck.

Thanks all! Tried the magnet test and it didn’t stick, so I’ll contact those who work with porcelain. And Bob, I agree it’s in rough shape—but I’m hoping to make it work and avoid it going in a landfill! Will report back here if I find a place.

I couldn’t see the photos on my phone, but looking at them on the computer they’re obviously ceramic. That sink is in awful condition. If it were mine I’d want to compare the cost of repair to that of a salvage sink in better shape.

Hi all, OP here. Sorry for the radio silence on my end; I appreciate all of the replies. Sounds like I need to first confirm that it’s in fact porcelain and not enamel on cast iron. Here are some photos of the deepest chips and crackling. The bowl and pedestal are separate pieces, both are white on the back/underside and both are extremely heavy (especially the bowl). From very dated NYT 1988 article
Workers for Porcelain Industries in West Islip, L.I., generally follow this process: first a bathtub is chemically cleaned and then washed with an acid solution to disintegrate the old glaze. Chipped, rusted or corroded surfaces are repaired. Next, a setting solution is applied so the glaze will bond to the original surface. OTOH a ceramic sink is unlikely to be as deteriorated as a neglected cast iron one. The c. 1910 oval pedestal sink I bought from a house on the next block was in excellent shape except for a few chips on the base of the pedestal which I filled in with automobile body compound. The repair is barely noticeable.

There is a difference between refinishing in place with what is essentially paint and removing and redoing the porcelain enamel on the fixture. Both approaches have their pros and cons.
