What's the word on "Bath Fitter" and its ilk?

Just be wary of them covering mold. Mold doesn’t dissappear with a new facelift.

We are desperate enough, with not 1 but TWO lousy and deteriorating tiled tub/shower enclosures, and no budget for demo/replacement, to consider the “Bath Fitter” solution, where they drop some kind of fiberglass-or-whatever condom over the whole mess (excuse me “assure the perfect fit, then craft your new bath or shower and have it installed by our professionally trained employees, in ONE DAY”). Part of me says, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Part of me says, “How much worse can it be than continuing to let water seep in?” Trust me, conventional regrouting and recaulking are not adequate options; one bathroom was built by idiots who used regular Sheetrock (which has basically disappeared behind part of the caulk line), and the other has subway tiles done wrong and popping off. I’m okay with the esthetics–ours is no landmark, and a clean Motel 6 bathroom would be a pleasure compared to the mold-inviting mess we have now. My question is: Does “Bath Fitter” actually suck?

I have no experience with “Bath Fitter” but how bad could it really be compared with what you’re living with? It seems to me that Bath Fitter could be a good fit for you now as you save funds for a whole new bathroom.

I had a friend who used them on Long Island and, yes, the result looks like a motel bathroom. But nine years later, he’s still happy with the job. It took one very long day, inlcluding replacement sheet rock and shower body. He says check newspapers for discount coupons, and if you call them, ask whether they have a nearby showroom.

well, there aren’t many things worse to a house than water (fire, earthquake, tornado, sledgehammers).  if you have to live with a plastic shower, so be it.  protect your investment from water damage.

My mom did that in her main bathroom for the same reasons you are considering doing it in yours.  It doesn’t have the greatest look, but it is nice enough.  I don’t know what company she used, but they did do it in one day and did a good job and she’s very happy with it.  I mention all this to say that a tub condom definitely isn’t the worst thing you could do and you may like it well enough to keep for a very long time.
