vanity lights over surface-mounted medicine cabinet

I am having the hardest time finding vanity lights that could work over a surface-mounted medicine cabinet. We can’t do sconces bc the vanity is right up against the wall. I’ve searched high and low, including for swing-arms and outdoor fixtures, but am coming up with only the attached option, It’s a beautiful light, but it’s $150 each – way more than we want to spend. We’d need two for each vanity, and we have 3 vanities (including one for a tenant’s bathroom). That would be $900 on vanity lights alone – I can’t do that. Does anyone have specific suggestions, since I feel like I’ve exhausted the search. Thanks!

Yes, we used the lights from Lowes above a surface mounted cabinet. The cabinet was about 5 inches deep and the glass shades are from 3-7 inches from the wall. They are not completely in front of the width of the cabinet but they still offer light over the mirror.

I’ve got a non-recessed medicine cabinet with a 2-light pointing upward, something like the one pictured in the 2nd reply above over it, and that, with an additional ceiling fixture over by the shower, gives me more than enough light to light my bathroom. The uprights bounce light off the ceiling and make for a light room. You could also use three-light fixtures if you needed more light. If you are set on down-facing sconces, you could build a box to attach them to. But with the way the uplights bounce light around, they may provide more light to the sink area than a down-facing sconce would, even one mounted on a box flush with the medicine cabinet. You won’t be able to see your eyebrows very well after 40 when presbyopia kicks in – in any event – you’ll need a handy magnifying mirror then whatever the lighting situation – you can have one that is attached to the wall and pulls out (called shaving mirrors frequently), or you can get a lighted mirror.

Something in the vein of Renart would be fantastic. I’ll have to scope the options and see if it’s in chrome or nickel and if it’s rated for damp locations… Cate – yes, it sounds like we have the same setup. The problem is both of our bathrooms are very small – so small there isn’t even any wall space available for a medicine cabinet unless it goes over the sink. Chemosphere – for your rental unit, did you use those lights from Lowe’s above the surface-mounted cabinet?

Whether or not they clear your vanity just has to do with how high the electrician wires the light and how high you mount your vanity. Ours is mounted so the bottom of the shades is just above the top of the vanity. BTW for our bathroom we did mirrors only plus separate storage just as Cate described and for the rental we did a surface mounted medicine cabinet.

I’m not sure I entirely understand your setup, but perhaps our situation is relevant to yours. We have chosen to hang mirrors only over the sinks. We have wall-mounted sconces over the mirrors, because the sink is in a corner and there’s no room for sconces on either side of the mirror. Bathroom storage is in wall-mounted medicine cabinets and shelves elsewhere in the room (and outside the room as well).

DIBS, I’ve seen pictures online of the box above the medicine cabinet that you’re talking about. It is a solution, i guess I’m wondering if there’s a simpler, cheaper option. It seems like 98% of the vanity lights out there won’t clear a surface-mounted cabinet, and I’m worried if I use one of these normal-depth lights, it won’t provide enough “task lighting”. I want to be able to see the hairs I need to pluck from my eyebrows when I need to LOL. RH – I don’t want to spend more than $80 per lighting solution for each bathroom (so if it means I need two lights for a bathroom, then no more than $40 a piece). I found plenty of < $30 lights that I really liked that would be perfect for a recessed-mounted cabinet, but I'm upping the budget bc it's so hard to find something that will work for surface-mounted. FYI the light I attached in my original post was a Hudson Valley light.

I don’t know if this would help you, but my company has been getting a good deal on Hudson Valley lighting fixtures so I’m able to offer them for less than retail.They’re nice fixtures but we don’t have access to all of them for great prices. I see that their swing sconces go for over $400 and to tell you the truth, I didn’t see them when I was picking up other models. We did have the Pound Ridge sconce for $90 apiece and can probably do better on that price x6 fixtures. I also remember seeing other single light sconces that would probably be even less money. Also, we have at least two of the Dryden side sconces left in stock for $125 each. Generally any wall mounted lights will supply enough light, even if they are flush mounted and the protruding surface mounted vanity is used, if I am reading your description correctly. I have though seen “light boxes” of a row of bulbs that would be used above the vanity and that “box” sticks out the depth of a surface mounted vanity. But I think any wall sconce is really going to provide more than enough light and needn’t swing out.
