Stone countertop search? looking for a partner to meet the large minimum with!
Do you have a small kitchen and are looking for stone counter-tops? I am too! I am having a lot of trouble finding any fabricator who will work with under 30-35 square feet. Would you like to join me in meeting this minimum together, for our small kitchens? I only need about 17 square feet. I am looking to find someone with similar tastes and desires to mine ? I went to a few New Jersey stone yards and know exactly what I want. Hopefully, you will like it too! My top choice is an unusual granite called Verde Gaya (photos of the slab I saw attached ? the lighter green. Also attaching Timbalada, #2 favorite of mine). The photos really don?t do the Verde Gaya justice ? it resembles a watercolor painting, and the color is a cool mint green with some translucent, subtle veins of purples and pinks and yellows. It looks very contemporary (looks amazing with light oak cabinets), yet still has the classic, timeless appeal of natural stone. A reputable stone fabricator quoted me $135/sq ft for this one. I have my eye set on Verde Gaya, but other favorites include Timbalada, Splendour Cream, Spartacus, Alaska White, Alpine White, Bianco Antico, Delicatus (all granite varieties). All of the other aforementioned varieties are $75-$85 per sq foot, with a few pricier exceptions. Please post here if you are interested and hopefully we can buy the stone and fabrication services as a team! Or does someone know of a fabricator who would take on such a small amount, without charging me an arm and a leg? Or another way to do this? I?ve thought of using additional stone elsewhere to meet the minimum ( garden table/countertops for living room furniture), but I?ve decided against it. I?ve looked through a few fabricators? scrap yards/remnants, but really never see anything out of the ordinary there, which is what I am looking for.

Bob Marvin – thank you for the recommendation. Called them, and even though they can?t really help me with this stone, they gave me some interesting information and they have a scrap yard I will go check out. Nyc_sport ? The trouble with remnants is that they rarely have as unusual like the stone I would like. That?s what fabricators make small items out of. And the fabricators mostly don?t want to commit to buying such an usual slab to only sell me part of it, in fear that they won?t be able to sell the rest of it later. Resident2 ? thank you, I will go check out their remants. When is the last time you did business with them? I tried calling a few of their numbers, but they?re all not in service, I wonder if they are still around. Thank you all for your input.

Most Fabricators will not cut out a small job from a whole slab, especially of the more unusual stones. It may take months before they can use it on another small job without discounting it. Try Acme marble on 17th St, they work with European Importers around the corner on 19th St, between them they often have remnants from large slabs of some very unusual stones.

I wonder whether your fabricators are referring to two different things. I have gotten stone vanity tops made half that size, so I don’t think this is an objection to working with less than a certain size. But if you are looking at slabs, stone yards typically require you to purchase the whole slab. It may limit you somewhat in selection, but you need a remnant, that someone will template and cut. The guy I used retired last year. I don’t know these folks at all, so this is not an endorsement, but this was the first result returned from a simple search for stone remnants. http://www.apmarble.com/reminants.html

We recently had granite countertops installed. Since about half the counter space in our semi-unfitted kitchen consists of aluminum slide-out counters on 19-teens Hoosier cabinets, we didn’t need all that much stone, I’m pretty sure < the minimum you mention. We used ATA, in Greenpoint, on the recommendation of a neighbor who has them install counter tops in their own kitchen. http://www.atastone.com/index.html I was especially impressed by their ability to fit stone tops to our original 1899 built in cabinets (that we had extended years earlier, with parts donated from our neighbor’s house). This was considerably more difficult than fitting tops to standard modern cabinets, and they did a beautiful job. They also replaced the top on our more modern cabinet that houses the sink and dishwasher [only 40 years old?we had it made when we bought the house] We used a plainer granite than the samples you show [it was a compromise?my wife wanted granite, I wanted something like gray soapstone]. However they took us to the nearby yard, where they get their stone, and there were some really beautiful patterns there [which I thought would go better in the lobby of a deco office building than my kitchen, but that’s another matter].
