Standard size appliances or more cabinet space?

I would bring that peninsula counter around several inches on the top part (across from the sink) and stick a cabinet underneath.  You know, like an upside down L.  Also, you can put a cabinet over the counter; build the wall out on the side to cover.  My kitchen layout is similar to yours and that’s what we did.

I am renovating a kitchen in a 2 bedroom apartment in park slope. My contractor drew up a cabinet layout with: a 27 inch cabinet over DW, a 30 inch cabinet over stove, a 36 inch corner cabinet flanked by two 12 inch cabinets, a 36 inch cabinet over the frig, a lazy susan and a sink cabinet. There is also a 60 inch peninsula with base cabinets. The contractor also gave a second option which would yield a better layout if I went with smaller appliances: an 18 inch dishwasher and a 30 inch frig. Is this sacrifice a good idea? Which option would result in a more desirable kitchen?

How big is your family?  There’s nothing like a full size refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser.  The 18″ dishwasher will cost you more than the 24″ and only saves 6″ A 5′ peninsula has a fair amount of cabinet space.

Dave: we’re a family with one kid and another one highly likely in the future. I agree with you about the full size frig. I just wonder if a future buyer of the apartment will think the 36 inch corner cabinet flanked by a stove and frig on each side (leaving only 12 inches between the corner and each appliance) is too cramped.

Actually i wouldn’t put a 12″ base cabinet on the wall side of a refigerator, place the fridge up against the wall.  It is handy to have counter space on both sides of a range though.  Can you post a floorplan???

That looks like a good layout.  Get a full depth cbinet for over the refrigerator.  You’ll also need the refrigerator panel on the side.  if you can affor it, get a counter-depth refrigerator. Make sure the countertop on the peninsula has a 1′ overhang so you can actually eat there wheith the stools

30″ fridge sounds fine.  I second the 24″ dishwasher.  My sister has two kids and a house with an 18″ dishwasher, which is constantly running. What’s beyond the top wall?  Can you squeeze a 1′-0″ deep cabinet from about counter height to slightly below ceiling height between studs in that wall?  I did that in an apartment with a teeny kitchen and the resulting pantry space provided just enough extra storage to make things work well.  You may also consider a lazy susan type install at the corner bottom cabinet and, perhaps install of (2) 1′-0″ cabinets below the peninsula – I realize you are trying ot place stools on one side of the counter so you may not find this suitable.  As an alternate, you should use big drawers on the interior side of the island. I wouldn’t put a wall cabinet above the peninsula.  It will make the kitchen seem smaller and the side view from the dining or living/dining beyond may appear awkward. You may also consider leaving a little slice of space above the fridge with a pull out for trays or sheet pans and mounting spatulas and the like on a rail near the stove.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely want to get a counter-depth refrigerator. The options are LG, GE, on the low end, and Electrolux, Bosch, Liebherr on the high end. Still not decided on that front.

Thanks elbow, yeah I was on the fence about putting that wall cabinet over the peninsula. Above that top wall is a small office, so fitting a cabinet between the studs might not work.

A 30″ fridge is plenty, you just have to be more disciplined about throwing out the pseudo-penicillin growing in the back. We managed for years with an 18cuft for 3, and it’s not all that full. I’d not get a side-by-side ref, wastes space and energy. Second 24″ d/w, not worth the diff of 6″ and extra cost.
