Quartz seam acceptable?

I should be used to all the mediocre work that has been going on in my house but just wanted some opinions if I should go back to the installer on this. I had my new quartz master countertops installed and it fit poorly so the seam was cut with a hand tool on site. The resin in not flush the the surface and even missing in one spot. Some friends have said just to move on with the rest of my renovation disaster- I’m still bothered by the seam. Any thoughts?

It is near impossible to “hide” the seam but it has to be filled with epoxy and should be flush If not you should have them fix it. It is their job and what you hired them to do..and they should do it.

It’s bad and not acceptable. The seam should be tighter and the color of the resin is an awful match. It might be possible to have the slabs pushed together more…. which would cause the extra space to end up at the end of the counter next to a wall where a bit more resin won’t be an eyesore. It seems that it never works to have the incompetent fix their own mistakes… and finding someone else willing to clean up someone else’s mess is not always easy. If the installer doesn’t have someone else who does better work to correct it… look elsewhere. I’ve only had one bad countertop installation over the years. One of the owners cut a template that was completely off.. as the room was slightly angled. He installed it and insisted it looked just fine and they would not do anything about it. When I told him that I hadn’t paid the remaining balance yet, the other brother showed up, agreed it was all wrong and did a great job fixing it. Even though it turned out all right in the end, I never used those guys again because I don’t think they would have done anything had I paid in full prior to complaining. That is unacceptable and not standard work. Do not let it go. Either they fix it or report to Dept of Consumer Affairs and hound them until it’s fixed. And please name your installer.

I’d be livid given the cost of quartz!!! That installation is totally inferior. We’re sort of in the same boat with the contractor we found on this board and I’m chomping at the bit to fire him but I’m not quite sure how to do it with open permits, etc. I posted this question to the Board a month or so ago and I didn’t get a solid answer. We paid a deposit towards our stone fabrication, based on the two slabs we selected and placed on hold, under a separate contract through our GC and I specifically told him that I want someone that takes a template, not just measurements. Fast forward to when we were actually ready for the installation and the fabricator shows up and takes measurements and not the requested template. I was not there for this appointment and as soon as my husband told me what happened, I called the GC and told him his fabricator was fired to which he responded…where is the stone, at the yard or the fabricators? I reminded him that that was his job and not mine and out of frustration we called the stone yard directly and were told that our 1 1/4″ slabs were sold to someone else. Our GC’s fabricator showed up at the stone yard right after he took measurements at our house and placed two 3/4″ slabs on hold so he was trying to pull a fast one and had we not fired him, we would have been in the same situation you are – with sub par counter tops, fighting with someone that already has your money. At that point I emailed our sh*t-for-brains GC putting him on formal notice that he was not performing his contracted duties and he had to return the monies for our stone deposit and deck (also not yet installed) or I would name him and share my experience with is company on Brownstoner, Yelp, Angie’s List and report him to the state licensing Board. We got our money back but have to get some inspections out of the way and then I never want to see him again. Just not sure how to switch mid-way through a project with open permits.

It should be as close to perfect as imaginable and solid with no chance of a seem opening later. I don’t know what went wrong with your renovation. I don’t have the time today to rant about how much of my industry operates on tax evasion and workers’ comp insurance fraud. Perhaps you paid enough for your contractor to do what you agreed on and everything was on the up and up. If so, your contractor is licensed with the NYC Dept of Consmuer affairs. What am I paying these lawyers to do with my fees, if not to represent you? I have seen cabinets so poorly installed on floors so poorly laid, that counters and the whole room buckles, shifts and sways. It is not a good sign that the worst I ever saw was in a flipped coop recently purchased by a judge. Segments of 2 x 3’s were loosely propping up the particle board bottoms of cheap cabinets, where load-bearing joints had shredded. Your stone is heavy and broken edges will be sharp. If the prep was bad, for your own safety, make sure it is not going to fall on you.
