Kitchen Renovation - Better to Pull Down Walls or Add to Walls for Cabinets?

In an old brownstone that hasn’t been renovated in decades, is it better to pull down the main utility plaster wall in the kitchen for a renovation or is it ok to build out the existing wall for adding cabinets etc.?  I’ve read tearing down and rebuilding is better but I’m getting mixed feedback from potential contractors, and am not sure if there’s an established practice or whether some of it is cost-dependent (or dependent on other factors).  Thoughts?

We are having a similiar situation, however we don’t know if we should keep the old plaster walls or not. My contractor says he will fix it and make it look brand new but every time I look at it I just want to get rid of them and make brand new walls. Currently some of the walls are broken because we changed the layout in some rooms so I am not sure if he can even fix some of these walls. What do you guys think?

If you like plaster better, why get upset with workers who sheetrocked your walls? Didn’t you hire them and specify materials and the work to be done? If you like plaster, why not hire someone to fix and patch your plaster? I’m not sure what they question is here. From you responses, you clearly know that plaster can be fixed. Unless your artwork is heavy stuff that you attach to the studs, then cupboards are an entirely different thing, as noted above. Old plaster is great stuff, and very messy and dusty to remove, so I can’t imagine removing it unless it was to create an opening where there was formerly a wall. Since you are keeping a wall there, and prefer plaster to sheetrock, I don’t know why you are even considering taking down the wall or using sheetrock. If it were a wall that you wanted to look at as a perfectly smooth newly plastered wall, then maybe you would want to replaster rather than patch. But since it will be mainly covered up with cupboards, not sure why you would consider replastering a whole new wall just to hide it with cupboards. Sure, many contractors will want to use sheetrock, you have to find someone who knows how to work with old houses and plaster, but isn’t that why you bought an old house?

As far as hanging artwork is concerned, I have found those brass hangers with the extremely sharp point, like a needle, work wonderfully. You can also hang art from the picture railing with wire and a hook made for that purpose. If you are hanging anything on a brick party or exterior wall, especially something heavy, use a lead anchor (and a masonry bit to drill a hole for it).

Sounds like you need to tell  your contractor what you want. What fbcg said. What do you mean by ‘shot?’…that the surface is flaky? Easily fixed. FInally, tearing down plaster walls is messy and adds to landfill. Most people would consider plaster walls part of the charm and much preferable to new, sheetrocked walls, but clearly you’re not i that camp. Only issue with plaster walls is that they’re somewhat uneven and need more work to hang cabinets properly (btw, IKEA cabinets have a simple neat hanging mechanism that will hang level).

Our existing wall is dried out plaster where we can’t even hang artwork properly. The walls are shot. 120 year old house. I’ve never lived in a place with such uneven walls. The floor above where the kitchen is going ended up getting fully sheet rocked over the dry plaster and now we can have art on the walls again. So I think cabinets need sturdy walls via sheet rocking over or a pull down and rebuild

The first thing that comes to mind, is it a load bearing wall, which could be expensive to remove, & the second thought is, if you build out on the existing wall, would that shrink the size of your kitchen in any way. just thinking out loud really.
