Kitchen Reno trends and recs?

Howdy stoners! Just wondering if anyone had any recs for custom kitchen cabinetry?  I know styles vary from person to person but just also wondering if granite is still all the rage or are their other trendy materials for medium-high end countertops? Many thanks

were I to redo a kitchen, I would use either Ikea butcher block counters, cheap but durable and quite beautiful, just make sure to seal well with a few coats non toxic stuff, or a recycled glass set in concrete product called Icestone, made in Brooklyn, sold at Ikea as well…costs similar to and gives similar feel as granite, but far more beautiful, as I am also one who never liked granite.   agree subway tile is nice as blacksplash.  as to cabinets, flat door if a modern home, or else a simple shaker inset panel with no routing anywhere if home is old and not entirely redone as modern …. these are the only good choices.

White subway tile is also both trendy and classic.

Granite is out of fashion. Currently trendy are white Carrera marble, soapstone, and honed granite. Some of these present more challenges than others (such as the white marble). I agree with the above poster that you should focus on a timeless design, not a trendy one. Try to put together a kitchen that looks like it’s always been there, not one that will look dated in ten years. Endless other options include wood and stainless steel. Also to be avoided are “country” cupboards with a routing detail, particularly the ones that look as if they come from Home Depot. Flush inset cupboards or something modern is preferable.

It’s personal but I hate the look of granite and to me it definitely looks “dated.” I think butcher block is great surface and you could mix it with stainless around stove/sink areas.    I also think the no upper cabinet thing looks great too, but of course means less storage so make sure you’ve got enough room if you go this route.

In my opinion it is best to go for “timeless” instead of “trendy”. The choice of countertop material will depend on durability, the material of the kitchen cabinets and the users own preference.  Granite and composite stone (like Caesarstone) are good, durable choices.  Marble, butcherblock and stainless steel are nice, but will stain / scratch over time.  Some poeple do not mind.  There are more unique materials like soap stone, concrete or recycled glass.  Regarding kitchen cabinets: It is a good idea to have a designer draw the kitchen design and have it priced by several fabricators.  I can offer some recommendations for great millworkers if you would like.

Current trend, which looks terrific, makes space so much bigger, and just updates the look dramatically: no upper cabinets.  Open shelves okay, but not closed cabinets.  For countertops, stainless steel is terrific and you can just ignore everyone’s gripes about it looking too cold and ultra-modern or industrial; not sot, if you keep the rest of the kitchen looking a little more rustic or warm.  For inspiration in a really wide range of prices and styles, look at apartmenttherapy.com.

I have used Jo-Lyn Kitchens a few years back.  The do solid, dependable work at fairly good prices.  They seem to work in any style, depending on the design you give them. As far as countertop, caesarstone is popular.  I also like soapstone a lot but it shows wear and tear so that is a personal decision as to whether you want stains and dings to add “character” to your countertop. Very highly recommend John Ragnatelli, ELITE Woodworking.  (718) 765-4050\.  John helped us complete a kitchen gut reno on a Park Slope limestone.  His company brings not only fabrication expertise but also significant design knowledge and experience as well.  If you’d like to discuss in greater detail, I’m very happy to walk you through what we’ve done and send photos.  r j l a r c h i v e @ g m a i l . c o m
