Kitchen flooring
Hello, we are in the process of designing our kitchen, and we are unable to agree on a good floor option. We are design-focused and want something that is both modern + attractive, and practical. , i.e aesthetically pleasing, modern, neutral, contemporary, but also something that cleans up well, is easy to maintain etc. We use our kitchen often, have kids, and live in a 3rd floor apartment. We’e considered Terrazo, marmoleaum, rubber etc. No idea too crazy! Would love some ideas for places we haven’t considered + Pros & cons. Thank you!!!

I far prefer wood floors in the kitchen. I haven’t found them to be a problem with water spills and the like, as long as you mop up the water. And, unlike tile that is damaged, wood is fairly easy to refinish. I suspect the 100+ year old wood floors I have had in kitchens were possibly harder wood, more seasoned, or had better finishing on them than perhaps newer wood floors do.
Not only are wood floors beautiful, but as you get on into middle age, you really start to feel the hardness of tile and cement floors more in your joints – they ache from standing or working on them. I put a rug on my last kitchen wood floor, as it was in a very old apartment building with cement (I suspect-I’m not an expert on construction over 100 years ago) under the floor – it wasn’t as giving as the wood floors I’ve had in brownstones.
Now I have a tile kitchen floor with a soft rubber mat in front of the sink where I stand – but I’d far prefer that cushion underfoot in the entire kitchen. I’ve considered those interlocking rubber squares to cover the whole floor (to be covered b y a rug), but I don’t like the rubber smell in gyms that use that, and I read that they put little rubber bits into the air you breathe.
Were I to choose a kitchen floor, it would never be tile – it would be wood or cork only. If I was building it, I’d put in a sprung wood floor, the kind dance studios use, for more give underfoot.

I had dark slate for a short period of time. It came from a Pennsylvania mine and was beautiful. Several of the 12×12 tiles cracked within months and every speck of dirt showed on the dark floors. Then, we used porcelain ceramic in an adobe color 8×8, with epoxy (no staining) grout in a darker color.. Has held up well for several years. Next time, I will use smaller tiles. Keep at least an extra box of tiles to replace cracked ones over time. Also found the Shark steam mop makes washing tile floors much easier.

Regarding Rejuvenate, I’d never have tried it if I saw their tacky “as seen on TV” advertising, but the stuff was recommended by a neighbor and it works remarkably well. However, it’s not that easy to find. The only store I know that carries it is HD, which I dislike a lot, although I’ll occasionally hold my nose and go there.

We went with a hex porcelain tile with a natural stone pattern and are happy with it. Obviously has the downsides of tile (cold/radiant, hard) but it’s durable, easy to clean and hides dirt well. [IMG_20180211_141910](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:UE7s:img_20180211_141910.jpg.jpg)

When [if] the original finish starts to look shabby I’m sure an occasional coat of Rejuvenate would take care of it, as it has for our parquet floors which were sanded and refinished >40 years ago.

Personally, I really like hardwood floors in kitchens. We refinished the subfloor [soft wood] in our kitchen and it looked good for years. The pre-finished oak we installed 40 years later still looks fine after a couple of years use. [135 Midwood 3 LR](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s2/:brownstoner:MJwr:135midwood3lr.jpg.jpg)

I agree that hardwood does start looking worn out especially if you use your kitchen a lot. We have hardwood upstairs and that’s why i went with tile in the duplex. Cork is great on the feet but I read one has to replace it after 10 years. That leaves vinyl and tile. If I had to do it again. I’d probably go with vinyl.

I cannot stand the hardwood in kitchens trend. Kitchens (and bathrooms) are wet environments which are not conducive to hard wood flooring. I had hardwood flooring in the kitchen of my old apartment and it looked worse for wear after being subject to numerous kitchen-specific events (water from normal sink usage getting on floor, leak under sink, hot pan accidentally dropped, etc.). If you want the wood look go for vinyl or tile wood look options.

I was thinking almost the same thing…If you have an open floor plan and I am assuming that you have hardwood, why dont you extend the same hardwoods or similar into the kitchen?

Greetings Emma,
Assuming you can do a “solid-wood” floor…
why not do something super-cool?
In a kitchen I personally would go with something already worn/distressed, something along the lines of a “french-cream” maybe with some gray under-tones. That way if soccer cleats, dogs, and spouses “pounce-upon it”… no biggie! For a finish I would personally go with something soft and forgiving such as Vermont PolyWhey.

We went with tile but I am regretting it slightly. I have to put radiant heating in as the tile will be freezing in winter and it’s taxing on the legs as well.

I just recently put down luxury vinyl plank floors in my kitchen. I needed something stronger than my cats. I got something that looks just like wood, with very few repeats in the planks, so the pattern doesn’t look cheap or fake. (Nothing like seeing the same knot every 4th board). I’ve had it about 5 months now, and still haven’t gotten used to the soft “float,” as I am used to walking on hardwood. But I love it – easy to clean and will probably outlast me.

I have Marmoleum and love it but recently saw (and walked on) a cork tile floor in a kitchen in an open house. It looked and felt amazing. Here’s a story about the house — unfortunately the floor is not all that clear in the listing photos https://www.brownstoner.com/real-estate-market/brooklyn-homes-for-sale-bed-stuy-575-macon-street-2/

We have a long, narrow, machine-washable rug with a rubber mat underneath for the high-use work areas of the kitchen. Definitely less taxing on the knees, back, etc.
