Kitchen/bathroom update newbie

I am in the process of closing a coop in Brooklyn. Once closed, the plan is likely to have mostly cosmetic work done in kitchen and bathroom, and painting the walls. Here’s what I am thinking: Kitchen: – New cabinets and additional cabinets is a possibility as I have a decent size kitchen passthrough – New Backsplash – New countertop – New faucets Bathroom – Replace wall tiles – New vanity – New faucets and shower heads My question is – Do I need to hire a designer before I start looking for contractors? – What is a good process to follow? – How long does it usually take? Thanks!

I’m sorry ikea cabinets are awful, even worse than thermafoil. They have a track system that uses brackets so the cabinets are not firmly in the walls…not a good idea for cabinets that store heavy stuff in them! I highly recommend jbj renovations mainly because james knows the job, speaks english (italian amer) has decades of experience working for his dad, recently started up so his prices are still not a rip off…he does high end work, highly recommend, really honest and a nice guy to boot!!! james 917-217-6142 jbjrenovations@gmail.com, i hope this helps u. I think if you have a good idea of what you want then I don’t think you need a designer. My one tip would be to live in the space for awhile and find out what niggles out about it then when you renovate you can fix it. Everyone’s different and you know better than anyone what you prefer – I think waiting awhile on our renovations really improved the end result. For kitchen and bathroom renovation I can’t recommend Chris Lombardi highly enough – he’s done almost our entire house bit by bit but he specializes in kitchen and bathrooms. We like IKEA cabinets too. If you have the budget, check out semihandmadedoors.com. They build doors for IKEA cabinets. Obviously it’s a cost up-grade but at least you’re not paying for custom boxes, just the doors.

I’ve posted before on this — Ikea cabinets are a great money saver. Better-looking and much lower cost than, say, Kraftmade at Lowe’s. And you wait an hour, not two months, for the stuff to be ready and you take it home. One caveat — the doors will take a beating. Eight years in, we had to replace all the doors in the kitchen in the rental unit in our house. The good news is it cost me about $350 for all the doors, drawerfronts and panels and a half hour of my time at Ikea. Save your order form with the list of what you bought so you can replace parts easily. In fact, file away every receipt, order form and product description for the stuff you buy for your kitchen.

Hire a designer unless you have the time and experience to pull together all the many details yourself (and there are many!). A designer can also help you establish a tight scope of work for the contractor to price out. We have worked with Claudia Giselle Design on our house. Claudia not only consulted with us on the design but acted as our rep when dealing with the contractor. She kept the project on a tight schedule. Which was great because we came in below budget. Agree you don’t need a designer but you could hire one if you want. Not sure about the timing on the kitchen — could be a few days or longer. Re the bathroom, depending on your setup, replacing the tile could be a partial gut. Could take three weeks. Luckily sounds like you’re not moving any fixtures, so this should be a relatively efficient and low cost (as these things go) remodel. Good luck.

My 2 cents: for a job like that, you don’t need to hire a designer. Only hire one if you have the money and want to. So if you don’t hire one, just scope out houzz.com and pinterest.com to see what finishes you like. If you’re changing the layout and doing an Ikea kitchen (or even if you’re not doing Ikea), use their online kitchen planner. It’s easy and intuitive to use. And hire Mentor Frangu.
