Is painting considered to be automatically included in kitchen reno?
I like to have a helper who can smooth out walls and paint, especially when I am doing something else. Trouble is, I am an insured and licensed contractor. I deduct taxes and provide the same level of workers comp for my painter/helper as for a carpenter. It is expensive. A lot of you homeowners can get this done cheaper by not paying tax or workers comp, or even if you do, insurance on a painter is way cheaper than on a carpenter. Typically coop boards don’t seem to check the insurance for painters, but I recently found one which does check. This one checks, but seems to look the other way if the painter is a friend of the super. Perhaps some day, we all will have to pay our reasonable share and the system will be less abusive and corrupt. Painting is a skilled craft done much better if coordinated with other parts of the job, not always at the end. Consider the over all quality of job well-done by a contractor who sees it through all the way. And, we all should pay our taxes and workers comp is required by law for all but two officers of a contractor’s corporation.

I am having the kitchen renovated and today my contractor said that painting is not included. I checked the contract and it isnt in there. I guess it never occurred to me that they would gut the place, build new walls and not paint them! Is Is this common?

Not if it wasn’t in the contract. One needs to separately include drywall, taping, plastering (if you want it), priming and painting and who secures the color and paint for the final color coats.

painting never included. It’s considered decorative, like your cabinets.

it’s not automatic but any good GC should have made sure that the terms and exlusions were clear before starting the job or signing a contract. The miscommunication regarding painting should never have happened. Make sure you are clear on what else is excluded before they try and hit you with change orders.
