Ikea discontinuing Akurum! Boo. Thoughts?

I just found out Ikea is discontinuing their Akurum starting February 2! I’m bummed – we installed an Ikea kitchen a couple of years ago and were very happy with it. Apparently the new one, Sektion, will not be compatible with Akurum. We’re starting our reno, but our 2 new kitchens will likely not be installed until…Yup – February. I’m really torn about what to do…On the one hand, I would like to stick with Akurum because I know it and I love it. And I have a sink that I love love love that definitely fits in their 24″ cabinet. (It’s hard to find a huge beautiful sink that will fit in a 24″ cabinet!) I can’t be certain this sink will fit in the Sektion sink cabinet (assuming it also comes in 24″. But of course the downside to buying a kitchen that is being discontinued is what happens if something breaks, gets damaged, etc? This is a big concern, since we will have a rental unit, and I would like the option to purchase replacement parts / cabinets if needed. But I’m wary of buying anything new as soon as it launches – I usually like to wait until they’ve worked out the kinks before buying a new product (e.g. Apple products). Also, the timing is bad, since it sounds like Ikea is not revealing anything about the new cabinets until the old ones are discontinued – it sounds like they don’t want any overlap with the old and new. So given our timeline of installing the kitchens in February, it will be a scramble to re-design them and purchase once they’re available. I thought about going with the Akurum, especially because it’s on sale now, and maybe even buying extra parts / cabinets doors as “just in case”…But then that defeats the purpose of buying it on sale. I guess the sensible thing would be to go with the Sektion, especially since we’re planning on living in our house for a long time (and suck it up and find a new sink)…But what do you Ikea fans out there think – what would you do?

They sold millions of Akurums, and unlike Apple they don’t expect you to buy a new kitchen each year. Panel sizes will most likely be the same (check European websites where it’s already sold). While they might not carry the same panels you have now, I’m sure it will be possible to replace the whole set if you want a new look.

This is bad news. Luckily, we just replaced all the doors and drawer panels in the rental. Bedstuy, you may want of buy a complete set of the facades. We found that after eight years the white slabs peeled and yellowed. The cabinets themselves are holding up. Very cheap and easy to replace all the doors and panels, though I will say the price doubled over eight years. PS 158 — go with a line that will be continuing.

We are in the same boat. Bought an Akurum kitchen in Sept and are getting ready to install it and was told about the changeover back in September. We dealt with a great salesperson who told us that the new kitchen design was really just changing the storage design, adding more compartments, etc… We stuck with the Akurum (even though the sink we want won’t be available until February) because we knew this kitchen would go on sale, had good reviews and could buy different door colors at a great price in the event we want to change the look down the line. I recently received an email from Ikea about this changeover and the email stated that all Akurum kitchens will be fully covered under their warranty and they will be maintaining replacement parts should repairs be necessary. I say get a great kitchen at a better deal and stay with Akurum!

I’m bummed as well that they’re discontinuing the Akurum. I just installed my Akurum cabinets this summer. I’m buying extra parts this month- just in case. Ikea says the warranty is still good but if the cabinets no longer exist, I’m not sure how they will make good on that promise. If I were installing a new kitchen now, I would still go with the Akurum, especially if the cabinets are on sale. Buy extra and you should be fine.
