Frameless glass shower: Use a bath company, like Kohler, or a glass company

It was recommended that we work with a glass company to fabricate a frameless glass shower (one side will be all glass and have a door and the other side will be only partially glass — tile wall with glass on top) rather than a bath company like Kohler. Advice and recommendations please, in particular for local glass companies that do this work. And do the glass companies have the hinges, door handles, etc., too? Note: We are not going to do a floor-to-ceiling glass shower to create a sauna effect.

As a bathroom specialist, I use glass fabricators, not ready made products. They can provide the hardware, but I provide it. I mock up the glass on templates and check the hardware positions in full scale, before it is too late to change. I don’t leave it to glass pros to install because I fear they will not appreciate how my membrane shower and tub surrounds function. They often want to drill screw holes and seal them with caulk. These holes, not rubber strips or metal channels cause mold, and caulk is not enough to stop it. Holes drilled in wet areas will inevitably leak and water will connect with organic material in a wall or floor cavity, perfect for mold. This is especially important at the base of a glass panel, where water cascades past, and pools. I do not allow anyone to drill through my tile and waterproof membranes. As you can see on greemmountain.nyc, there are no metal channels and no rubber strips. But, it does not get moldy because all the water goes down the drain, not because of the rubber strips. It doesn’t as long as you keep it clean, which is quite easy. It’s a removable strip of rubber, running the length of the door. I never had any problem keeping it clean.

Thank you both. DIBS — does the rubber edge get mildewy? That was something that drove me crazy about or old, crappy shower. I figured if it was just glass it would be easy to clean, but maybe the rubber edge you’re referring to is different from what I’m thinking of.

It has to be templated so much better to have someone local do it. They have all sorts of hinges, brackets, etc and they are of very high quality. I can’t remember who I used but if you search old Forum posts, I know I recommended them a few times back in 2008-2011 or so. They did an excellent job. Whoever you wind up using, DO NOT let them sell you on a film applied to the interior to keep water stains off. They don’t work. And, get a rubber edge for where the door meets the panel, NOT a mitred joint.
