Custom wood cabinets for Ikea kitchen frames??

We are in the throws of kitchen decision nightmares (and I thought this was going to be fun). We are weighing all options and a friend of mine suggested investigating the route of buying the Ikea frames, however, getting wood doors made by company like this (from her research, there are many, but all seem to be based in California). I wanted to ask if anyone has had experience with this, good or bad? If good, did you use anyone local for the doors, and could you post their contact info? IKEA makes great frames and uses some of the best hardware you can buy. Custom cabinet makers use the same hardware but charge and arm and leg for them because they are expensive. I know Dendra Doors based in Oregon has a wide selection of solid wood or Veneer wood cabinets. Shipping is built into their pricing. I used them for a kitchen remodel in Eugene Oregon and Loved my kitchen. I am considering using one of the IKEA vanities and PAX storage systems and their custom IKEA doors. They give free estimates.

I use Ikea boxes with custom doors on my projects all the time. I think you get a lot of high end cabinet features in Ikea boxes.. self close drawers and doors, lots of interior options.. wire grid pullout drawers, pull out bins, lots of drawer divider options etc. Some of the ikea doors are nice too. I use custom doors when I want a specific period look… and when I want to cut the Ikea cabinet boxes to make them custom for the space. Just remember that the cabinet boxes that you cut to customize for your space, will not be able to use fancy pullout bins, etc. These cabinets will use only shelves that can be cut size. My contractor has a couple of millwork shops he uses to make the cabinet doors either in wood or MDF with or without glass inserts. I’ve also used companies like the ones you’ve mentioned in California. The measuring is the tricky part and mistakes are expensive once freight is added on. 1/16th of an inch doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is everything when trying to fit the doors correctly. You have to know what type of hinges to have them drill holes for. Some companies will also prime and paint the doors for you in the brand and color of paint colors. The sprayed on finish is much better than if you paint them yourself. If the kitchen I’m designing is modern, laquered doors are a nice option. Beware that each of these added things adds to the cost of each door. You would think holes for hinges would be included in the base price, but is not and this should really be done in a shop, on a drill press to make sure the doors will all hang straight. Depending on your design, you may also need cover and end panels made to match the doors. It’s worth it… but it’s not as simple as I thought it was going to be, the first time I did it. If you’re going for a painted rather than a stained door, you can paint Ikea doors if you prime them correctly.

A lot of people have used Scherr’s – they know how to size the doors and drawer fronts for IKEA boxes. Googling them should turn up lots of info.
