Can you suggest a good handyman/woman for a small kitchen and bath renovation?

Hi, I’m in the process of purchasing a small apartment with popcorn ceiling throughout that supposedly has asbestos. We plan on testing this to confirm but would like to find someone who could renovate a kitchen (new cabinets, countertop, appliances but no moving of walls) and a bathroom (new floor, toilet, sink & cabinet and changing from a tub to a walk-in shower so we’ll need some tiling). The idea would be to not touch the ceiling if, in fact, it has asbestos so the work would have to be done without disturbing it. Additionally, we’ll need some floor sanding and painting. Any leads on a reliable, reasonably-priced and licensed handyman/woman who would be able to do this job would be great. The job is not a large one. Thanks! GP

You should realize also that if determined that you have asbestos in your ceiling and you hire someone to do work that may bring them in contact with it, even if your intent is to do the work “without disturbing” the ceiling, you are inviting the possiblity of an enormous lawsuit. and as an earlier poster said there is no such thing as a “licensed handyman.” Handyman does stuff like, oh, shovel a sidewalk and maybe do some interior painting. Assuming what they’re painting doesn’t contain asbestos.

Hi its worth adding that even if there is the slightest chance of asbestos on site you absolutely do not take a risk and get anyone in there who doesn’t a) understand how to deal with asbestos and b) understands how to manage the approvals and processes. In our experience it works out a whole lot less expensive, not to mention safer, to get it right from the start. Often, as you write, it can be dealt with without needing expensive removal, but its not often you get asbestos in one part of a bathroom and not in other parts. We have some good stuff on managing asbestos in period bathrooms on www.clawfoot.com and it may also be a good idea to check with your neighbours as they may have had the same issues.

All you need is a contractor to renovate your kitchen. I used clean wrap during the remodeling of my kitchen and it prevents the [ceiling of the kitchen](http://cleanwrap.net/) from molds and moisture.

So you have a kitchen and bath that need to be fully renovated (gutted most likely) along with sanding of all floors and painting the entire apartment. Additionally you have asbestos. Definitely not a job for a handyman. The building will require that you obtain plans and permits and that all work is performed by licensed contractors. Hello; This is definitely not a job for a handy man. You need a contractor. I use Patrick DeVerteuil 718-309-3934 for all my high end rentals in Fort Green/Clinton. I know he has done many apartments in the Clinton Hill apartments (Co-Op) on Clinton Ave and Co-Ops on Eastern Parkway across from the Museum.

You’re going to need more than a handyman. You’ll need a contractor. 1) you have an apt. the coop board will require you to file for a permit cause you’re doing plumbing work. Yes, plumbing work. You’re changing a tub to shower and replacing toilet and sink. That required a permit. 2) You have to submit an asbestos report to DOB. So guess what. You’ll have to remove the asbestos to get a permit.

there is no such thing as a licensed handyman.. once they are licensed and insured they are called contractors and must have all applicable insurance which costs a fortune…
