Bathroom remodel/restoration

We just bought an 1890s townhouse that has a bathroom with an antique clawfoot in it, original tiling, etc. The sellers had hacked together a hideous plumbing solution to use modern faucets that they stuck in the walls (with a plastic shower curtain *behind* the faucets!). We’d like to get the bathroom touched up -and the wall repaired – and are looking for contractor suggestions.

Any licensed plumber can handle this, but they won’t have the nickel piping if it’s needed. That’s a special order item. You may need to order water supply lines and a waste in nickel as well as the faucets and/or shower from a place such as Strom/Sign of the Crab. Check out Vintage Tub and Bath online, which carries a lot of different brands of this nature. If you need to match tile exactly, American Restoration Tile in Arkansas may have it in house or can make it to order to match exactly, right down to the crazing, in small quantities. They have a fairly long lead time for custom — I think it’s 2.5 months. If you post a photo, we can give you more specific advice.

Well, I think most any plumber who’s used to working in old houses could do this. Speak with your neighbors to get local recommendations. I’ve been using Stanley Lewis Plumbing for several years since or former wonderful plumber (who, I’m SURE. could have done this job) passed away. They’re in Prospect Heights now, but used to be located in my neighborhood (PLG). I think they’re pretty good and could probably do this. You’d probably want to buy a repro faucet yourself though, whatever plumber you choose. Here’s one good source I know of: http://deabath.com/index.html but there are many others.

Do you really need a contractor? I think you might be better off with a plumber who can install a reproduction or salvage faucet on the tub, run pipes to it, and cap the pipes to the wall mounted modern faucet. At that point you can look for someone to patch the original tile. It may not have to be a perfect tile repair. If you’re keeping a shower in the clawfoot tub you’ll need three shower curtains hanging from a D-shape or oval rod, and this will mask the repair. BTW, I’m really glad to read about someone who wants to undo the remuddling of an original bathroom, rather than replace it.
