Are heat lamps allowed in NYC?
I’m thinking about the hotel bathroom kind, not the LA restaurant terrace kind. It might be a good solution for our chilly top-fl bathroom, but I’m thinking I’ve never seen one in a home here. Is that possible?

Heat lamps are typically 300w & produce blinding light and not much heat (1300btu). As others say, a heat+fan combo is much better (1500w, no extra light). Needs its own 20a circuit. Panasonic is very quiet.

I have one of these in my top floor bathroom, vented through the roof. The vent part works very well; the heat lamp helps in this room that doesn’t have a hot air register. radiant heat in the floor would be great, but retaining the original 1899 tile and marble slab floor trumps comfort in my set of priorities.

I had a heat lamp that was put in a bathroom ceiling when the bath was renovated (by a prior owner) in a bathroom that had no heat. As the bath was on an airshaft, it was cold. But I never turned on the heat lamp. It just annoyed my eyes whenever I turned it on accidentally. And it didn’t provide much heat, even in a tiny bath – you just felt the heat if immediately undeneath it. Waste of money, in my opinion. I also had a bathroom with a heather/light combo put in the ceiling. I never used that either, even when the bathroom was cold in the spring and summer chilly seasons when the radiator wasn’t on (there was no need for more heat during radiator season – the radiator worked well.) I might have used it, but it smelled whenever it was turned on. Not sure if it was a faulty heater, or just installed incompetently by landlord’s worker – typical cheap-ass landlord declined to investigate or have it fixed. I left it off. I have no experience with radiant heat floors, but that sounds heavenly in a cold bathroom. The kind of accessory heaters in baths I’ve found useful are ones not that far off the floor – you often see old-style ones a few feet off the floor, next to the toilet-paper holder. That’s where you want hot air, not blowing around up by your head, as heat rises anyway.

they have bathroom fans with heaters and blower fans built-in. basically a large built-in hair dryer, (not as loud.)

Heat lamps are perfectly legit, however they do need to be connected to a timer switch.

The ceiling heaters will be more efficient, especially if they are wired with 220 v

Our bathrooms have no heat so we had heaters put in the ceiling (only space we had in the small rooms). I chose a Broan heat/fan/light combo. We’ve been using them for a while now and I think it works great. I also recommend getting timer switches for the fan and maybe the heater. The timer on a fan really makes sense–after you shower you can let it run for 20 minutes and not have to remember to turn it off. That said, if we were gutting the bathrooms I would have gone with radiant floor heat. Love that stuff. Even with that, I might put the ceiling heater just for those days you want to be extra warm.

A better solution is electric radiant heat in the floor. These systems can be thermostatically controlled and add some nice warmth under foot.

Ha! Thanks. I’d be doing it (or not) as part of a permitted facelift for the bathroom, so probably will investigate a little further.
