Anyone use slate for countertops?
There are a few slate dealers (mostly VT) that sell slate for countertops and have some really nice photos- plus Houzz also has plenty of examples. This is good quality slate, not the type that can flake apart. Has anyone done this and willing to share their thoughts? It’s weird because a lot of countertop places we’ve visited don’t seem to know anything about it as an option, but there is definitely a lot of nice looking examples of it being used for counters online, though not very many distributors. We love the look of it and its supposed to be even less porous than granite. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I love our soapstone. If I get around to it, I give it a coat of mineral oil maybe once a year. Never really seems to actually need it.

Try Soap Stone for a similar look and alleged better durability.

We got all of our stone from European in gowanus and all the fabrication from Super Stone. Been VERY VERY happy with both.

Was it Vermont Slate? I’ve read that you don’t even need ti seal that type, though there are other slates from other area which are much more fragile. Where did you get your slate from and do you know the type of slate? Thanks!

We got slate for our wetbar counter. It looks great but it is VERY soft. I would not use it in a kitchen or a place where you don’t want a patina. It has a great feel. We had to special order it from LI as no place locally seemed to carry it. We are also using it for our hearthstone since we had extra.
