Any appliance repair techs in Brooklyn, NY who don’t charge a service fee just to check the fridge?

My fridge’s freezer works fine, but the fridge section won’t drop below 40°F. Compressor’s running, fan might be shot or the damper’s stuck, not sure. I’ve done basic checks (no ice build-up, compressor hot, no visible blockages), but need a pro to confirm before replacing parts or scrapping the unit.

Looking for a local appliance repair tech in Brooklyn who won’t charge just to come out and diagnose—only if I go ahead with the repair. Not looking to burn cash on a 10-minute look.

Any recommendations or independent techs you’ve used?

Sounds like you are looking for somebody to diagnose your problem and then do the repair yourself. Generally you won’t be charged for the visit to diagnose an issue as long as you move forward with the actual repair. However, you will however be charged for the person’s time if you decide not to.

If it is a basic refrigerator, it can only be a few things – the fan, the thermostat, timer or defrost coil. Plenty of simple tests can be found online to figure out what it is. The damper is usually mechanical so that is unlikely the problem. Pull the back panel off the freezer, open the fridge door and tape the switch shut, turn the thermostat to the lowest setting, and manually rotate the timer. It’ll tell you everything you need to know as long as the compressor and relay are fine.

There are plenty of local appliance repair shops who will come out to diagnose at no charge, then proceed with the repair for a reasonable fee, usually around $80 per call (not including parts). There are many along Broadway between Bed Stuy and Bushwick, and may be some in areas such as Greenpoint, Park Slope, Gowanus, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, etc. Usually you drop by in person early in the morning to request service.
