Adding pull-out trash and recycling drawer under counter
There is a large gap in the base cabinets of our kitchen where the previous owners had a wine cooler (pictures below). The gap is approximately 20” wide x 24” deep x 34.5” tall. We want to add a pullout cabinet/drawer for trash and recycling. The rest of our cabinets are IKEA SEKTION with matte-white Axstad styling. They are 30” tall with a 4.5” toekick/plinth and are 24” deep. So the height and depth dimensions work well for us. The width is where there seems to be an issue.
IKEA offers this SEKTION pullout base cabinet for recycling. However, it’s 18” in width and that includes the sides, which we sort of already have in this existing gap. We’re considering using this option and then having an ~2” gap between the pullout unit and the right edge of the counter unit or a 2” gap between the pullout unit and the drawer base cabinet unit to the left. That gap wouldn’t be very practical with its narrow width and large depth. So then we could cover it with a similarly styled cabinet front just for aesthetic.
All of the above seems pretty hacky to me and seems to potentiall y create extra waste with the additional pieces that come with the entire IKEA pullout base cabinet kit. Does anyone have recommendations or experience with this type of project?
Could we do something more DIY and find a matching size (20” width) cabinet door and buy a pullout system elsewhere?
Is there a better way to manage the difference between the IKEA pullout width (18”) and the width of the existing gap (20”)?
Thanks so much for your suggestions!!

Yeah, 2″ filler on corner makes more sense – I didn’t notice we were dealing with a corner unit there. Could make a nice square corner post, rather than flat filler.
21″ door even better – though they need to get the actual same door – these are Grimsolv not Axstad – and they need to make sure the color is still an exact match – sometimes colors change slightly, or cabinets in place change in color over the years. They may also need to do some work, which may or may not involve removing the countertop temporarily, to make this look right, given how the countertop fits on – it all depends on how much work they are willing to do or spend to do.

It looks like Ikea makes a 21 inch door in white matte Axstad. Could you shift the right end panel 1 inch to the right to allow for it? Looks like its a few brackets that are holding that panel in place. You’d lose a bit of the counter overhang but the side overhang looks more than the front overhang, so perhaps it wouldn’t be noticeable.

Definitely get the 18″ IKEA pullout to match your cabinets. Put the 2″ filler on the right, to make a nice corner.

It’s not clear what your ultimate aim is here. If you want your cabinet front to match the others, then you have to go with with size the doors come in, which seems to be 18″ from what you’ve written. So put in the Ikea pullout, and use 1″ filler piece (not a door) on each side. It will look fine.
If your goal was to use the entire 20″ space, you can install any kind of cabinet and pull-out in there – there are many out there – for a custom job, but the front will never match the other Ikea door fronts. If a flat door, painted as best a match as you can find to the color of the Ikea doors works for you, your options are limitless. Me, I’d prefer the matching Ikea door.
You can also take your question to Ikea – I understand some of the kitchen designers can give you options you might not have thought of.
