Closet designer

Before I spend stupid money on California Closets…does anyone have recommendations for someone local who can help me configure a couple of closets?  I know I can go to Container Store and buy the Elfa system but every time I go in there I am so overwhelmed by the choices, I would really like to pay someone to help me figure this out, and I don’t necessarily want to be limited to Elfa.  Thanks!!

I’ve also heard bad things about Calif Closets.  Container Store can be expensive and seem to be a bit generous with space, which doesn’t work for small NY/Brooklyn spaces.  I agree with cookiecutter, Ikea’s PAX has some great options; at least, I would go there and see how they organize their closet spaces for deas.  Then you can get some quotes for a custom build to help with your decision.  Oh, and one other piece of advice, be sure to go through your things and organize them, and get rid of items you don’t want before making your final decision on the closet/storage space.  This way, you have an understanding of what you actually have.  I had a client that thought they needed lots of space for hanging, but when I went through all of their things (clothes, hats, shoes, jewelry, papers), they realized that shelving was required more than hanger space.

I tried to get an estimate from California Closets last year and it was an unpleasant experience. Rude, cheap, defensive about their materials used and options. Their website is just a teaser of what they have and will do. I talked to one stores owner and he was such a pr&#K to deal with, I scrubbed using them for six closets and went the Ikea and self handyman route. End result is great but the greater satisfaction was not giving them my hard earned money. So, I say give Ikea PAX closets a try.

I have no idea what California Closets cost, but we turned a very large space (1/2 bedroom type of space) into a closet and used Castle Closets.  I thought the process was really easy and we love the results.  It cost about $1800 for everything.

We loved Easy Closets when we installed them in our old apartment and plan to do so again.  Great function, looks and feels custom. Not cheap, but not custom pricing. Plus there’s usually some sort of a Costco discount, if you are a member. www.easyclosets.com.

If you go to the designer desk at the Container store with the dimensions of your closets (inside and opening), they will design the entire system for you.  They also have a very reasonable installation fee, and their contractors know how to maximise the space.  You just need a rough ideas of how many pairs of shoes you own, how many linear inches of hangers, and how long is your longest skirt or dress.  I’m a fan!
