Public adjuster for insurance claim
Hi, Has anyone every used a public insurance adjuster for a claim? We had a flood a few weeks ago and have a ton of stuff that was destroyed, but are unsure how to word/value some of the stuff. One of my relatives was strongly recommending that we use someone to help, said that they really earn their keep. Any advice (and names if you have) is appreciated. Thanks

I would be very hesitant to use a public adjuster. They generally demand 10% or more of your total claim. The question is: what is the liklihood that they will increase the payment from your insurance company by more than 10%. It may be more worthwhile if you have a lower-tier insurer who is going to be particularly difficult or slow to pay. The alternative is to see what the offer the insurance company makes and then judge whether an independent adjuster will be able to help. In general (and I cannot speak to Anton), independent adjusters swarm after a fire or other damage with a hard sell to sign a binding contract. Even if they never do any work, you will owe them their fee.

I am sorry to hear your experience was so bad with Anton. My claim was some years ago. I wonder if it is a small claim (my guess is under $20,000) then he isn’t terribly incented. Mine was a multiple of that. You might talk to your insurance broker and ask if they have someone to suggest.

I used Anton recently. STAY AWAY! I contacted him, he came out to view my damage and said he could help. He requested that I send him documentation, pictures etc. Which i sent the same day. A month later, i called to follow up with him. He said he never received my information (which was in my sent box). This happened two-three more times before I started to realize how unprofessional/unresponsive this guy was. Almost a year went by and Joe finally said he couldn’t get anyone on the phone at the insurance company and that he could not help. Really?! I was left to deal with my insurance company alone and answering questions like “why did you wait so long to report the damage.”

Call Joe Anton, Anton Adjustment. 866 641-5700\. We used him after a flood and Joe was amazing. The settlement was far better than I could have gotten myself because he has contractors, appraisers, and other resources he deals with who know exactly the right way to present a claim to maximize the result. He gets paid a cut. There is also (in my case) a holdback from the insurance company that is released only when you prove the settlement has been spent. Our insurance was through Brownstone Agency. It took them over a year to actually pay me — lots of “check is in the mail” lies, phone calls, and ultimately visits to get them to honor the agreement. I hope they are better now…..
