How much insurance should one want/expect a general contractor to have for a major brownstone renovation?

Yes, there are legal requirements and the DOB requires proof of insurance – and proof of numerous other business documents – from any contractor registering with them.  Once approved, a registration card is issued and the contractor is entered into the BIS system.  I carry my card with me at all times.

How much insurance should one want/expect a general contractor to have for a major brownstone renovation (not a gut, but moving kitchen, putting in bathroom, doing structural work).  Are there legal requirements on this?  Thanks.

Any legitimate general contractor should be carrying a minimum of 2 million in liability plus the required comp and disability.
