Insulating the basement hatch
Dear Neighbors With Saturday’s snow coverage, I note that the rate of melting is much much higher over the hatch to our basement, indicating that we’re losing a lot of heat. How do you insulate yours to avoid this waste of energy? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Jp

Or install an additional door ‘downstairs’

see what dibs says. I did that and it was good, but I busted the foam up over time. so I switched to a foil clad foam – like celotex but a bit thinner. has held up better. the celotex would be good but I was afraid the thickness of it would allow me to pierce and eventually rip apart the material. foam will be good if you are not in and out and hitting ladders, etc off it. there are adhesives for this type of application. and thin stuff actually does almost as good as the heavy stuff. Arkady It’s a very non-fancy metal one.

I just insulated the basement side of the door that provides entry into that area with rigid foam board.

If you don’t use the hatch often (and most of us don’t) you could build a narrow shelf (one inch?) all the way around and create a “cap” to sit on it made of plywood and insulated with rigid foam. Alternatively, do you have a door to the hatch from the basement? If not, install a well insulated one.

Depends what material it’s made of.
