Anyone try Ultratouch insulation by Bonded Logic for their attic space?

Anyone have a good (or bad) experience with this stuff?  Anyone recommend someone who has experience installing it?  I spoke with a green building supply store today which has this product and am kind of down to cellulose vs. this stuff, since if we do batt insulation I’d want to use this at the highest level it offers (R30, apparently a little over $2/square foot) I know Ultratouch isn’t cheap compared to fiberglass but don’t know how it compares to cellulose.  we got a relatively reasonable price to blow in cellulose insulation through our roof with 2 vents installed, and would need someone to install the Ultratouch batts through the ceiling the way they install fiberglass.  I know batts aren’t as good for an attic (R30 with batts vs. R50 apparently with cellulose) but we’re in an old brownstone and I worry about proper sealing of the walls, ceilings for cellulose and dust issues, and the Ultratouch (if it really works) seems like a better option. Thoughts?

Did you read the linked article. It tries hard to be critical of cellulose,  Test: how many people are allergic to newspaper inks?! Read this as counterpoint: http://bct.eco.umass.edu/publications/by-title/cellulose-insulation-a-smart-choice/  Of course, you’ll find as much info on either side as you want on the web. I wouldn’t expect any danger from any insulation above a ceiling (remember, any off-gassing will migrate upwards, not down). All that stuff about ‘leaking’ from electrical receptacles and IC lights is easy to fix. Use a 50c receptacle seal or the appropriate foam if you’re worried.

i don’t personally believe its anything too revolutionary, it depends more about how you feel about recycling and formaldahyde-free / lack of off-gassing.  these are really the percieved benefits, personally i don’t know if above a plaster ceiling its much of a benefit – low voc paint and other things inside the home – sure – but above a ceiling is a bit of a stretch for me.  i’d go for higher r value personally.     i think there’s a lot of emotions at work rather than real benefits, but i guarantee you will find someone who takes the opposite argument.

R50 is a lot better than R30, especially if the higher R value material is cheaper. FWIW I’ve lived with blown-in cellulose for  about 35 years with no real problems. Ocasionally  a few bits  of cellulose filter down through cracks in the woodwork, but, unlike fiber glass, the stuff isn’t objectionable–it’s just ground up recycled newspaper
