Paint or refinish floors first?

Hi, which is best to do first? Paint the room or refinish the parquet floor? I’ve looked online and it seems like a 50/50 toss up so I figure I should ask the experts here! thanks!

OK. Every contractor had a different approach. In my case- Step one: puttying & plastering & prime coat and one finish coat. Step two: floor sanding- roughly,up to 80 gr.(why? sander can do damage on a walls). Vacuum here to help. Then finish coat on a walls (of course floor must be protected from the any paint drops & dust). Then a floor has been buffed and inspected for imperfections, the final work on the floor will be done. That was step 3 and 4\.  In many cases situation are different. 🙂  And check this out- http://www.hometechforyou.com/alb/the_history_of_this_house_nj_2009/ed_lr/house/index.html  Parquet guy- Yura. Call him 917\. 335.4874\. Say Dmitriy gave the phone number.

these answers make me think it matters whether you are doing it yourself, or hiring it out.  If I was doing it myself, I would prepare the walls, scrape, patch, and clean up, then do the floors, then wash off the walls and paint.  I know I can take precautiions not to scratch floors or drip paint on them.  it appears that most people think you can not find workers who can do that, so maybe the order is different if you hire people.

What coopfornow said. Do the floors first and by the time you get done, they will be a mess, even with the cleanest, neatest, most careful workers, even if you try to keep them completely covered up. Do the floors last and they will be pristine. Yes, a little dust on the baseboard and lower walls, but the machines they have now keep that to a minimum.

Because then you won’t risk dropping paint on a new floor. Or scratching it.

I’ve done many renovations and I always do the floors last. If you do it that way, you’ll see why….
