Position of air conditioning vents

Our designer positioned them on top of two closets (in the bedrooms) and another on top of the shower, but the GC is telling us that the most efficient way to do it is to have them come down from the ceiling..…what is the answer to this and this cheaper for the GC because he doesn’t have to build ducts on top of the closets/shower? On a lower floor we have vents coming up from the floor (not ideal but it was cheaper in terms of construction to have the air pushed from the basement) any suggestion on where to place these vents?

If you are confusing, which one is right your designer or GC then You will search on internet or take the advice from another HVAC professional. It is best way to find out the correct suggestion. you can also visit [ventis website](http://www.ventis.com.au/how-it-works/cool-home/ “ventis website”) for more information.

Won’t make a difference as to the efficiency of cooling.

If it’s for cooling only then it should not matter so long as the diffusers are correctly sized and the system is balanced. If it is heat then your diffusers should be at or close to the floor.

don’t forget that above the closets you may lose some space inside due to the bulkhead needed to frame it out near the ceiling.

I agree that vents in the wall look much better than in the ceiling where they scream out at you. It’s an easier install to just drop them through the ceiling rather than turn them to come out above the closets. Don’t let them get away with cutting corners.

We have several above closets as well as several in the ceiling. Aesthetically the ones high on the wall may be better overall (your eye does not notice them as much) We have both and they are both fine, but your eye goes to them immediately when they are in the ceiling. For us it came down to least reaonably invasive because it was a retrofit and not installed during a gut. But honestly when he says “the most efficient way” it is too difficult to tell if he means adding another bend will reduce airflow and compromise how well the system runs, or it means most efficient from a worker-hour point of view. There should be enough wiggle room to make high wall registers but sometimes it is so difficult it isn’t worth it. Most good HVAC designers will do their best for aesthetics but also remember that a wall placement that is doable in any particular situation may not throw the air into the room properly (i.e. blowing it towards / out of a door). The goal is to have all rooms equal temperature, and a three way ceiling register can throw any way he/she wants. It comes down to personal preference and the way the hvac person designed it – it should not be done in a vacuum without their input. AND hopefully your GC has a good HVAC person who designed the system. That is the make or break line between a nightmare and a smooth running system, and the road is littered with horror stories of GC’s who did all the work themselves or with sub-par hvac subs. good luck,

As long as the vents are up high, I don’t think there’s a big difference between being in the ceiling & being in the wall. If anything, I’d assume that there’d be greater air velocity out of the wall which would spread the cool air around more instead of a ‘curtain’ falling directly from ceiling vents – but that’s just intuition, not knowledge.
