Clinton Hill Co-ops A/C install

Hello wise forum. Looking into installing window A/C for my first summer in the South Campus of the Clinton Hill Co-Ops. Unfortunately, the living rooms of these units have the weird window layout with one large picture window surrounded by two narrow windows (about 13.5 inch internal width clearance, including the tracks). Example attached. I see some units in the complex have installed casement A/Cs in these windows, which is really what I preferred to do, but all the casement A/Cs appear to be 14ish inches wide. Are these people really chopping up their window frames? That seems…short-sighted, but maybe I’m missing something. I really want to avoid using a portable A/C, and the more normal windows around the corner in the dining room are only temporary solutions, because I’m going to want to wall that room off in a year or so for a nursery. Help! Edit: Not sure where my attachment went, but here’s a link: http://goo.gl/vyB4po

The Clinton Hill apartments inmates are a friendly enough group. Just introduce yourself to your new neighbors and ask them about their air conditioners. The Super there are also very helpful and friendly. Someone there will probably let you in on the secret.

Not weird, your window has a name: Chicago Window. The skyscraper is not a New York invention, some of the first ones still stand in Chicago. Examples of early skyscrapers by Chicago architects in NY: Flatiron, Daniel Burnham 1902, Bayard–Condict Louis Sullivan, 1899. Search on Chicago Window. Burnham and John Root’s masterpiece, the Reliance Building 1895 is a good example.
