Hi- Looking for some input from any regular Brownstoner readers on companies who do thru-wall A/C installation. We live in a detatched frame, and are looking for some help with this- a top floor installation, with vinyl siding. Anyone have experience with contractors who have done similar? I’m likely to do the framing and inside wall prep and finish, but don’t have a ladder for the outside, or the siding knowledge and materials. thanks-

You might as well pull a siding contractor out of the phone book.  I will tell you why, I used to work for a home improvement contractor and while working for that person, I learned how to do siding.  the thing is, I have worked for other contractors and no where else did I learn anything close to what you learn doing siding.  its not like a wood floor guy or cabinet installer or painter can do the siding unless they have done it.  Once you have done it and know what can go wrong and know what to call the materials (you will need an aluminum cap bent on a brake, and a J-channel to wrap that in addition to the extant siding), it is easy.  the biggest mistake homeowners make when they do siding is cutting it too tight and not allowing room for expansion in the hot months; it sags.  The other reason you will need a siding contractor, and this is why someone like myself cannot do it, is you are going to frame the outside of that box just as a window with a wood frame.  that frame should be capped with bent aluminum which must be made up on a brake.  only these sort of contractors carry a brake and the brake is a pricey item.  if it were not for that and the ladder, you could do this on your own.
