Cut 2 panels out of old wood door and insert one piece of glass

I have a door that I want to cut 2 panels out of an old wood door and insert one piece of glass. The inside of panels are carved (routed?) and I want it to be continuous, so it doesn’t look awkward. Know anybody who does this?

the glass is going to have to stay firmly in the frame somehow – thus cate’s comment about using molding of some sort to sandwich the edge of the glass on all sides. Because this is a retrofit, there wouldn’t be a way to plop it the original groove in which the raised panels currently sit without deconstructing the stiles and rails, which would most likely compromise the structure of the door at this point. Other options: Cut the whole panel out down to the rails / stiles, and use either 1) retainer clips to hold glass in place, or 2) use glazing points and generously silicone on both sides. So aesthetically i guess my suggestions would be either molding, silicone, or retainer clips all of which will be clearly visible.

Hi Cate, Well do you know how the panels have grooves along the perimeters of the panels? Instead of adding another wood element (where I would have to find a molding that matches the wood exactly), I wanted to see if someone has a tool that can use a router for the cut-out and create the same groove. Not sure I fully understand the question but you can cut one hole, put in glass, and put some molding around the glass to match the molding on the other panels. A finish carpenter can do this.

I tried to post a pic of the door, but the system won’t let me It’s only 18kb, so it must be a problem with the functionality of the Brownstoners’ website. So instead, I will describe it to you…the door has 5 horizontal panels, from top to bottom.
