Woodworker for Finial

Hi everyone. We need to have a finial made to replace the missing one on our brownstone staircase. Anyone have thoughts or recommendations on where we should be looking for this? I know we could go to an architectural salvage place, but I think the easier route is just to have one made.

the silver haired man is the founder and probably technically still the owner; tony. Tony is the man in the circa 1980’s photos operating the machines. my guess is tony has more time to talk than the others. john is his son and seems to have risen to his father’s position. Erich is the guy in the sales room, he sits in the desk to the right. erich has a degree in forestry products. so when i have questions about wood and its performance or identification, i go to him. erich’s history in door construction and woodwork goes back to his childhood via a high end family business.

when covid hit i got very nervous as they are my main wood supplier. they seem to be busy though.

Steve, is john the owner of Adriatic? We’ve been there a couple times for a knife he made for us and we chatted with him a bit. What an amazing guy! I love the pic he has at their “reception” desk upstairs. Could talk to him forever.

Love that place. Happy to see businesses like that still in NYC, especially not all that far from our house.

if you know john Grbic, the next time you see him, let him know you mentioned their capabilities on line here. i just emailed him about this conversation. i have been using them since 2007 and never knew what their on site capabilities where in so far as carving and turning.

when they open back up i will ask to go up there. they will not let anyone in now.

in truth, i could make the finial here (i make bowls and the odd metal part for hinges and shafts for my machinery) but i use my lathe so infrequently that it is buried under all sorts of stuff.

I was blown away when I went up there. I couldn’t believe how big it was. It isn’t cheap but it was nice stuff.

Adriatic has a full custom shop in the second floor. They do wood turnings, custom carving, etc.. I was surprised when I went up there it is really large. You are correct they aren’t allowing people in. I know they have finials.

2345bcde: adriatic is not allowing people inside due to covid. I also have never seen examples of custom work there, on display, though they do stock the entire dykes line of moldings. So best they call first.

Adriatic Wood Products in Brooklyn can help. They will either have something you can use or make what you need. It’s worth going out and taking a look ( it is huge ). They make most of the moldings for Dykes. They’re on Pitkin Ave in Brooklyn and have parking.

The finials for these have big bases. So if you look at finials on line (ebay, i buy turning blanks for stuff like this on ebay) and find one without a base, you can find a rossette to apply the finial to.

For examples just look at Brownstoner open house choices on Fridays. There are always pics of entryways with newelposts. Also Google images for newel post brownstone and you’ll find many different kinds, often round w grooves or some are urn/vase shaped.

Hopefully someone will post a picture of one. They are often round and the size of a good sized orange. A little smaller than a grapefriiit. They are often missing because i think they are left loose so they can be lefted off when someone must pass large furniture over them.

If i were not so busy i would offer to make one.

A finial as in on top of a newell post? Is it round over the top like a ball or does it taper? They are spun on a lathe and a big ball is a little harder to make.
