Wood Stripping Class for Beginners

Hi Everyone! Three of us attended an introductory wood finishing class with Steve on Saturday. It was packed full of useful information such as: different types of sanders, the general types of wood used on exterior doors in NYC, sanding difficult wood (maple), stains and staining and top coats. He demonstrated sanding & staining on a beat up maple counter top he rescued from the trash. I found the class to be really informative + great camaraderie with other like-minded homeowners.

I’m hoping Steve will hold another class focused on wood stripping. He’s agreed, if there’s enough interest. **So, if you’d like to participate in a wood stripping class one of these Saturdays or Sundays, please comment on this post!** Steve says he’ll chime in and answer questions about his availability and the topics he can cover in the class and that the cost is modest when we split it by 4 or 5 ways.

Here are my thoughts on how to proceed with this:

First, i have to try to schedule this around OP and Tucker’s availability. Most likely it will be on a Saturday or Sunday, mid to late morning and it will last 3 to 4 hours.

The best way to proceed is to ask someone to bring a door to use as an example. and the best way to do that, is bring it here the night before and put the chemical on it (and cover it so it does not dry) and let it soak in.

Basically, because of the chemicals involved and the risk, this is something that i have to do the work on on my property. But if people are willing to sign releases, perhaps we can work two or three doors and i can move around between people helping and coaching as fit. i welcome input.

I plan on using methylene chloride which presents a problem: it is no longer available on the retail market so unless someone has a business, it can not be had. i can mix some lye up and perhaps we can use that but lye has its limitations (it is used for paint grade jobs as it discolors the wood) and we can try some of the other c hemicals on the retail market but none of those are my “go to” and there is a reason for that.

Tucker has an interesting heat stripper and i can ask if he would bring that and demonstrate it. they are too slow for me and some of the older ones were risky because it was too easy to burn wood.

I don’t think we have a date in mind for this yet. we can keep the conversation going here but at this point, anyone interested in this can reach out to me via the email at thetinkerswagon.com. i am teaching this class through my company.

i’m potentially interested in a class like this as well, having just unearthed an old pocket door during a small renovation. i’m trying to figure out the easiest, best, and yes economical way forward, and would consider taking a class for a DIY approach.

Also interested, maybe for two. Scheduling maybe be tough for us but we’d love to join this.

I am interested! In the final stages of buying a house that Steve inspected; if it goes well, I have some pretty gunky old doors in my near future.

I attended the class as well and want to second what 4h said. These homes we are lucky enough to live in are so special, and it can be hard to get good information on how to maintain them and put the TLC in to preserve and restore their beautiful details. Ive done a lot of reading online and watching videos etc, but getting to learn from a guy who has been working with these houses forever and is willing to share what he knows was really incredible. Count me in for paint stripping!
