Wood Handrail on indoor staircase - Code ?
We are installing a wooden handrail on our stairs from parlor flr to garden level. Wondering if there’s code that covers this. Can we put a straight run of wood handrail or should we begin with a horizontal foot of railing at the top which then angles down …….So straight ? Or with a join/bend…anyone know ?
Thx in advance

Don’t know the detail of the code but can share that we just had our CofO inspection and have a wood hand rail that was a straight run around a landing and down 10 stairs – we did not have the rail return to the wall – the inspector was very thorough and we had an expeditor that reviewed before the inspection. Neither flagged the handrail and the Cof O has been issued.
Handrail is 34 inches from nose of each stair.

op, this code is on line. i just tried to look this up without digging into the code and as it always happens, it returns all sorts of stuff for every corn husking town in upstate ny, never nyc. the height all of these seem to return is 34-38″ over the nosing.

I used to do these so i used to know. I do know you can do it in one run. I am not sure where it may end in conjuction with the top and bottom steps. I can tell you this, it must have returns to the wall at the top and bottom. It cannot simply end in mid air. This is so people using the stairs in the dark know they are coming to the last step. I am trying to recall and think i used to start them plumb right above the start at the top and plumb right where the last step ended. Consider distance from wall so no fingers get caught. Sorry i cannit recall the specifics, its been years.
Urbandad, you like to know things, why dont you pull this out of the code for miss emily.
