Winterizing Garden Level front door

My GL front door is the original single-panel glass-on-top wood door. It is very leaky and cold during the winter. It is the flush-to-the facade door, around the corner from the iron gate entry. Is there an effective way to winterize it? Does anyone make double-paned replacement glass? Or is there an aesthetically pleasing, LPC-compliant insulated door that has glass that I might buy to replace it? Thanks for any advice!

Thanks all. Lots to think about here. I will see if a “standard” insulated replacement door will work best.

Oh, i was thinking front.

And op, if you have a second vestibule door in the front all of this will work better.

Steve—I was lucky that a pre-hung HD insulated door could be made to fit the opening in my rear shed/mud room. The thing is draft-feee and a pretty good imitation of wood. However I wouldn’t use one in front. We have two doors leading to the under-stoop gate so, with weather stripping, they’re not too drafty.

Bob, i get people calling me asking me to rebuild those sometimes and i do not think they are asking because they love those doors, i think they are an odd size in a smaller masonary rough opening. It means they need a custom door and that gets pricey.

I can say a couple of things about installing double pane in one of those doors. I don’t think there is much benefit. The solid wood panels are going to transfer heat anyway. My guess is double pane is good on modern insulated doors.

The glass will have to be tempered or laminated. Most double pane units are tempered and tempered breaks easier than lami. Also, those old doors under the step are thin. A double pane unit will reduce the width of already thin glass molding.

If it were my house, i do not see a net gain with double pane. I would use 1/4 lami which has some r value over plain old glass.

There are ways to insulate around these. Product made by a company called randall products in newark. Dykes has it, to the right and behind you as you walk in. We make wood capped rubber sweeps for the bottom of doors.

I don’t think the LPC would be concerned about that door since it isn’t really visible from the street (at least the one in my house isn’t).. That’s not to say you should use an off the shelf HD type door but, FWIW the fiberglass insulated door I installed in the back of my house, going to the garden, is a big improvement over the interior-type door that was there originally and, when painted, looks like a wooden door.
