Window Treatments
hi there – I wondered if anyone has a suggestion for a good person to do window treatments. We need something stronger than regular blinds to block the street light from coming in – and something more elegant than a black sheet. Many thanks!

I personally like wooden blinds plus curtains. When the curtains have blackout liners the combination is very effective. https://www.blindschalet.com/ has great prices.

Many hardware stores, like Pintchik, will cut inexpensive roller shades to order. We have these behind the cloth shades in out bedroom–very effective at blocking light and, IMO, not worth spending much $$ on, since you don’t see them.

Also depends on whether you have standard size windows. We have huge custom ones, so got black-out roller blinds made by Innovation Shades – great experience.

I agree with ksr on blinds.com. They have both blackout shades and draperies for a more elegant look.

Have you tried blackout blinds? In our last place we ordered some through blinds.com (Bali: DiamondCell 3/8 Midnight Double Cell Blackout) which were great. If you install them inside the window frame (you need to decide before ordering) they block almost all the light, and you can barely see them.
In our current bedroom, we decided to go cheaper and ordered “Economy Room Darkening Shades” (also at blinds.com or home depot) which are terrible. They still block the light, but the cord breaks constantly. It’s a design flaw where it rubs a rough corner every time you raise or lower the blind until it breaks.
Blinds.com has a 45% off sale through the weekend. Home depot owns them so you could check prices at both.
