From the comments, it looks like there could be one or more of several issues at play here. unless you are someone who is used to messing around with equipment like this, call a heating specialist and have them correct this and check the entire system out while they are at it. once the system is where it should be, maybe then you can change things like steam vents on your own.

cate, i had a customer call me about a vent doing that years ago and i had no idea what was going on until i went to the basement and looked at the boiler pressure set point and i told them “call a heating specialist” and walked out.

and to what eman said, someone who writes on this board asked me about a radiator that was behaving odd in her house (we are not plumbers, we were there working on something else) and I looked at it and said call a heating person. that time i was sorry i did not check because it was the radiator valve closed most of (but not all of) the way and the radiator had filled with water condensate.

i mess with stuff like this in my own house only because i am use d to dealing with mechanical things (mostly cars) and know what can go wrong and can generally find a way to isolate something if something bigger goes wrong (or suffer with the heating system off for a couple of days) – but all these little things can turn into something beyond the capability of the average homeowner. if you grew up turning a wrench on cars, that might be different. Call one of the heating guys on here and have them check it out.

Looks like you may have an adjustable air vent that is missing the top valve piece so that steam is not being trapped like it is supposed to. If so, stop using those kinds of vents and you should have less of this problem

And make sure the radiator valve is fully open or fully shut…. Half way open will trap condensate and wind up with this mess
