>>> Whole House Battery
About once every year— about this time— I post to see if anyone has had any luck navigating through all the complex State and City regulations on installing a whole house battery to “time shift” electric expenses through Time Of Use Billing.
Theoretically, TOU billing and a 14kW battery could save thousands of dollars a year for the typical brownstone owner.
I see Chinese Lithium-Ion batteries are now under $500kW, and the costs of the inverter is basically negligible…. In my case creating a sub $8,000 solution to power the whole house for literally pennies a month.
Anyone have any luck over at the DOB, Fire Dpt and Insurance carrier for either installation or simply news?
Thnx.

Also- I don’t think the solar companies are overwhelmingly onboard with whole house battery thing.
Once there is a CLEAR path for adoption it will be easier (and much less expensive) to simply install two boxes in the basement (inverter and battery) vs. $20-30K (after rebates) worth of equipment on the roof.
PLUS
The solar companies will lose their SWEET refund/subsidy deal they have with the state authorities which puts thousands of dollars in their pocket for each installation.

Ive been following this CLOSELY for 4 years now, nothing seems to get better at the city level.
Two years ago, NYSERDA published a solar/battery model plan…. But I’ve seen no actual implementation or REAL pathway for consumer adoption.

I’ve been told the same (batteries not allowed). However, BSW tells me that it will be easy to retrofit existing solar arrays once they are permitted.

As of 3 months ago they are not permitted in nyc per fire code. The fire department doesn’t have the right chemicals to put out a battery fire (or they’re not quickly available) and doesn’t seem like there is any desire to change that. This is from Brooklyn solar works when I spoke with them about solar. Happy to be told things have changed though!

You may want to direct this question to solar installers – I think they are current on what is permissible as many of their customers are eager to install a battery to compliment their PV arrays.
