What's the deal with townhouse/house ground floor doors that are at an angle?

I live in Downtown BK, near Vinegar Hill and Brooklyn Heights. Walking around I’ve noticed some building have these really interesting front/street level doors that are at a 45 degree angle to the street corner. I’ve also seen them in Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill. I can’t find anything online about them, perhaps because I don’t know what terminology to search. I’ve asked architects and architectural historian friends, but I haven’t found out anything yet. They also exist in the Village (I was spurred to post this after seeing that the old bookstore on W 10th St, which has one of these doorways, is closing). Can anyone tell me more?
