What type of mortar to use on 1899 brick?
We have an old townhouse, built in either 1899 or thereabouts… We need to repoint the rear brick facade but are wondering which mortar mix to use. I’ve heard that using modern Portland-based mortar mixes will harm the bricks and not allow enough breathability.
Landmarks says to use Type-O, however I’ve read that’s not suitable for exterior projects, and it seems cumbersome to mix yourself since you can’t buy it pre-mixed. There are historic lime mortar mixes available from Limeworks, for example, that contain only sand and lime.
Anyone have any experience with either of these mortars? How did it turn out? What do you advise? Will we get in trouble with Landmarks if we use a Limeworks mortar, even though that’s probably more historically accurate than the Type O?

It’s the rear facade, no one will know otherwise. I’d say do what you think is right for you.
