What is your water pressure?

We have a brand new water main coming in with a 1 1/4 line with 40 psi. I was curious to know what everyone else’s is…. New water main or not.

Water pressure isn’t affected by the pipe size or a partially closed valve. Those things affect *flow rate*. There are two ways to read your water pressure. One is a *static pressure* reading taken with no faucets running (fluid at rest). Attach a gauge to a hose fitting and screw it into a spigot somewhere in the cellar closest to the point of entry (the water main). That’s the pressure you’ve got coming into the building and is the value given when comparing pressures in buildings because it involves more constants/fewer variables.
The other is dynamic pressure. Run water somewhere while that same gauge is attached and you’ll see a drop in pressure on the gauge. This is what you can consider to be your *working pressure*. A crushed main pipe or partially closed valve will create a higher difference (∆P) in static-to-dynamic pressures. Typically, your faucets will work well at anything above ~30 psi, or 2 bar. That’s the minimum pressure most residential water fixtures are designed to deal with.
Of course as you climb higher in the building, you’ll get less pressure.
1 psi = 2.31 feet of height.
That means for nearly every 28 inches of height you go from your gauge, you can expect to drop 1 psi of pressure.

Good post, OP.

Hope this helps.

You should ask Harris but maybe the main shut off valve isn’t open all the way? Or your area may just have lower water pressure.

Any idea what the issue could be? Harris installed it
