what are we going to do about Mosquitoes
For most of the year I can enter my garden only after applying a generous amount of Deet, and if I forget a square inch I will get bitten right there. Any other sprays do not work. The only other thing that works is to constantly move around looking like an idiot.
I eliminated standing water, also in the neighbor yards.
If I gas the backyard with Pesticide, they will be back 5 minutes later. They don’t care about Citronella, smoke sticks or any of the other cute stuff. Only the combination of all measures at once seems to have some temporary effect.
Let’s face it – Tiger Mosquitoes will be a constant presence in Brooklyn backyards – So what to do?
Build a pond with larvae eating fish that may attract dragon flies? But that is a huge effort for an uncertain effect. Maybe build a screened porch to create a small safe zone?

The sprays work really well. However, I worry about the impact on bugs we like (like bees and fire flies). When we didn’t spray for a while, we saw some fire flies come back (although nothing like the number we used to see 10 years ago). So, I am torn between avoiding horrible mosquito bites and damaging the environment.

just wanted to raise the flag of not killing bees in the cause of killing mosquitoes. Many of those backyard sprays (like cutter) are deadly to bees, but there is one called “eco-smart” that attaches to a hose and covers the entire yard. It works for about a month and lasts a bit longer if conditions are dry.

gwan -sorry missed your reply. Fan outside still looks like new – except for maybe one bolt that has a little rust. You just pop the fan out out and bring inside for winter – literally takes five seconds. Couldn’t be happier. Like a box fan, it has sound so if you want to hear the sounds of nature that is the only downside i can see. I use to spray, but with kids and friends constantly in the yard, no longer.

Yes a very buggy season it is.
The DEP is spraying parts of Brooklyn. I’m against spraying because it is hard on other wildlife, especially birds.
A fan is a great idea,’ and you might think about which plants attract a lot of bugs ( sadly, roses do).
Mosquito repellent plants are: lavender, rosemary, , marigolds and catnip, along with any lemony scented plants. There is also citronella grass (I’ve never planted it) and citronella candles. Are an old time solution.
Good luck!

I bought an outdoor fan, weatherproof, partially sheltered by bay window. Cover in winter. Works well. Not foolproof, but definitely keeps them away. Get rid of ALL standing water, even in plant dishes and candle lanterns.

dorkofwindsor – I’ve been looking at those, but from what I read even though they are listed as good for wet conditions, if they are not covered they will break down/rust quickly. What’s your experience?

Mosquitos are bad this year, for sure. It might have been these frequent heavier rains that caused standing water all around. And either they are getting faster and harder to swat, or I’m not as quick anymore. Aerosol foggers work well for about 45 min to an hour, then you need to re-spray.

A strong fan can help. I actually have one of those tall skinny fans in our front stoop running non-stop (the skeeters love it in the stoop) and it has definitely helped keep them away from that area (not eliminate but greatly lessen) which means a lot fewer are getting in the house which feels like quite a victory. They can’t fly in a good wind, so maybe you need some fans running to enjoy your yard? signed, a favorite snack of the mosquitoes.
