Water / Sewer Protection Program?

I keep getting offers for coverage from the NYC Environmental Protection Program. I wanted to see if any of you have this coverage or any experience with it. Is it actually necessary in anyone’s view?

If youre talking about AWS (american water systems) that is included with your water bill…yes. i had a leaking water main (thankfully it wasnt a full break) around this time last year and they replaced it for free. It wouldve been a $7-8000 fix if i didnt have the coverage since the water main was across the street from my building. Cost is only $24/month for me, so it paid off instantly.

Heard what sounded like a running faucet coming from where the main enters the building. Called the number on the water bill. They sent one of their inspectors to check it out. Said it was a leak. (I also called the DEP who said the same thing and gave me a notice to fix it within 72 hours). They came out and replaced the whole line for free. The only niggle i had with them is they dont cover any damage to the concrete ON your property line (they did cover the sidewalk though). Gave the guy $50 and he repaired that piece of concrete too.

Yes, agreed. “What if” is the very purpose of insurance. The issue — and it is worth reading the archived threads on this — is whether the scope of the coverage is adequate (i.e. all the “ifs” are covered”) or whether AWR has reserved for itself the right to disclaim on grounds you would expect to be covered.

It is some company that got the ok to solicit to customers to offer this protection. Let the buyer beware because you could pay and never have a problem or never pay and have a huge problem. It is basically buying insurance against a “what if” scenario.
