Water Main Repair -Sharing Experience
I tend to keep to myself but felt it was necessary for my neighbors to be aware and understand what I experienced this week. First I was denied my water main insurance for a leaking water main in the street from the DEP insurance company. This is its own issue within itself and I will deal with this as needed.
The bigger issue was the company the company that I ended up hiring to replace my water main. I want to avoid naming the company but will say they are in Carol Gardens and I am now aware have a reputation for cheating homeowners. They were five minutes into the job and suddenly told me that my sewer was broken and my sprinkler main was broken and all had to be fixed right away.
At this point I cancelled the job all-together, I was not going to stand for this and will not be taken advantage of. I should have done my research and spoken with a few of my neighbors instead of hiring the first guy that showed up. Long story short, I hired Harris Water who apparently is the most reasonably priced and ended up doing a great job replacing my water main.
Moral of the story- Dont let any contractor push you around and try to take advantage of you. I can just see what would happen if I was an old lady

Ah. I think I used the same company for work on a fire sprinkler supply line. I only found out about the MTA issue after the job went pear shaped. After they called for the wrong inspection twice, and failing twice because of that, it meant they could no longer get self-certification. Only the plumber wasn’t willing to call for another inspection because that meant being on site to do some (interior) tests they apparently had no idea on how to do. Fast forward a year of “we are on it” calls and texts, I simply hired another plumber to take over the job and had my approval, via self-certification, in 10 days. I though their exterior work was fine. I just should have realized that my great idea of having one company do both the messy exterior work and the interior connections (to avoid one plumber blaming the other for something not done correctly) was not so smart.

Ha – Bob is a wise man. My research shows the only reason there were two companies with the same family name because of some fraudulent activity while doing work for the MTA – the article I read says they actually went to jail for several years .

I just guessed about the company [although I’m PROBABLY right]. Actually, when I used them there were TWO with the same family name; maybe I picked the good one.

I agree with Maggie O. There seems to be some Brownstoner rule (written or unwritten) against naming companies that do a bad job. However, other than an endorsement of Harris (which is helpful), the other information is useless since I don’t know who that company is. (Bob Marvin is better than I in his ability to decipher the identity).

you might as well name the company… not sure why you wouldn’t… without naming them it isn’t really helpful information.

FWIW I used that Carroll Gardens company to replace my water main about 20 years ago and my sewer line several years later. They were fine then; too bad they’ve apparently declined since. Back then this un-named company and Harris were the standard Brooklyn companies for such work.
